Gov. Draws Ire For Concentration Camp Joke (Mike Huckabee)
Republican Gov. Mike Huckabee drew criticism from a Jewish Democratic group Friday for jokingly crediting his 100-pound weight loss to a stay in a concentration camp.

Huckabee, who is considering a run for president in 2008, made the comment Wednesday on Don Imus' radio show after the host told him he looked “emaciated.”

I have just come out of six weeks at a concentration camp held by the Democrat Party of Arkansas in an undisclosed location, making a hostage tape,” Huckabee said. “That's why I look that way.”

A spokesman for the National Jewish Democratic Council said Huckabee should apologize.

9. They slipped this chucklehead in through the back door
Ken Starr got two known perjurers to testify against then governor Jim Guy Tucker to force him out so the then-lieutenant governor, Mike Chucklebee, could get into the governor's mansion by default. Somehow the putz was able to win two elections after that.

31. Hucklebee's not running this year
Asa Hutchinson is running for governor on the Republican side. Most polls I've seen show him trailing his Democratic opponent, Mike Beebe.

10. That's really gross.
It equates Democrats with Nazis and the concentration camps with weight-loss centers.

Really funny, dick cheese.

11. Ah haw, haw, heee!
Gosh, Mr. Huckabee, you're so funny! Concentration camps, torture, hostage videos! Gosh, where do you come up with this kind of material? You really should go to the offices of the Christian Science Monitor. I'll be you'll have them rolling in the aisles, especially Jill Carroll.

Ah haw, haw, heee! Torture is just sooo fuckin' funny. No wonder the GOP rewrote the laws of the land so the president could do it legally.

Apparently, in addition to the dumbass allele, there is also a insensitivity allele over-represented in Repuke DNA.

14. They are making a big deal of something they shouldn't
It is oversensitive to complain about this one - and concentration camp is a general term - doesn't have to even refer to the Holocaust.

19. It's clear that he had the Nazi camps in mind
His joke makes no sense otherwise.

However, I agree that it's an example of cluelessness and carelessness, not malice, and shouldn't be escalated into a controversy. And for the record, much of my mother's family died in the Holocaust.

26. That's what you think
You learn about death waaaaaaaaaaaay too early when you grow up without a family. Imagine it if you can ... no grandparents, aunts, uncles or cousins. You hear about these things, but they don't exist in your life.

So why don't you demonstrate some sensitivity and quit talking about conditions about which you admittedly know nothing.

Too sensitive? I don't think so ... considering the magnitude of the holocaust, the public reaction to Huckabee's quip was about right. I don't want us to become desensitized to suffering - look what it's done to you.

27. What in the world are you talking about?
I'm 63, and I'm certainly not playing the victim.

I mentioned my mother's family because someone said, in an earlier post, that those who don't think the joke was outrageous can't have lost family members in the Nazi camps. I'm someone who did lose family in those camps, and I don't think the joke is worthy of outrage.

I think I made that clear in my post, but your knee seems to be jerking so wildly that you can't read properly.

22. And this guy is a potential 08 pres candidate.
Edited on Sat Oct-21-06 05:00 PM by seasat
Our possible nominees are looking better and better. I read some stuff on him a while back. He's kind of an odd duck. He is strongly religious right in his social views but populist on other issues. I think he's an ordained baptist minister. CATO blasted him a while back for his flip flop on increasing taxes. He's pioneered a healthy school system program for Arkansas. I'm interested in following him in the primary because, IMHO, his supporters may indicate how much Christian Conservative support remains with the GOP during '08.

32. I may have lost family to the potato famine
If he wants to refer to that, I don't think I'll get hypersensitive about it.

Really, where does it end? Aren't there enough real anti-semites out there that one should be offended by this? And this guy probably didn't mean anything by it.
