Google faces recruitment blues in India
SAN FRANCISCO: There may be more than a billion people in India, but even an Internet superstar like Google Inc. has trouble recruiting talented locals in its South Asian operations, a board member said on Tuesday.

"I know first hand that we've had a bit more of a challenge trying to hire engineers for Google in Bangalore compared to other parts of the world," Google director Ram Shriram told a private investment conference taking place in San Francisco.

In particular, the venture capitalist cited a shortage of Web development skills such as knowledge of Javascript and Ajax (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML), the Web design technology used in the latest generation of Web sites like Google Maps and Flickr. Middle managers also are in short-supply, he said.

"The people are smart, innately smart but don't have this particular skill set yet," said Shriram, an Indian native who is a founding member of Google's board of directors.

1. Ahhhh, too bad. I bet
they might find some folks available in the U.S., but of course those are "the people that won't do the work" or something like that........Screw the outsourcers and the horse they rode in on.

4. I wonder if the Indians are asking for better wages than what are
currently the norm in India, There are a lot of tech workers and other professionals of Indian descent in the US, surely those in India know they are being screwed financially by corporate America!

5. Translation:
We at Google are trying to find tech people to work for 6 bucks an hour and can't.
So therefore, there's a shortage of qualified people in India.

11. Perhaps you despise
what you do not understand. It is fear that breeds hate and mistrust. India does what it does in response to Pakistan's threat. They have exercised great patience with Pakistan. Several years ago, they came close to the brink of war. Both sides were frightened by how close they came and have tried to build bridges ever since. If Musharif is over thrown and a more Moslem extremist government takes over, yes there will be serious trouble. India will defend itself. Do I trust either country implicitly-NO. But then again, I don't trust our government completely either.

But for all it's shortcomings, I did feel safe while traveling in India. We stayed for most of our time in Hyderabad, a city with all three religions represented (Hindu, Moslem, and Christianity). We had no problems and were treated as honoured guest where ever we went. My young daughter (13 at the time) states that the trip was one of the most transformational one she has yet to make. We both had reservation when we first made the trip, but the anglo western feminist and her teenage daughter survived the Hindu and Moslem experiences and have a better understanding of that corner of the world.

15. If you think India and Pakistan are the same
Edited on Wed Oct-11-06 05:29 PM by fujiyama
then you haven't been paying attention - at all.

India is democratic (albeit flawed) and unlike Pakistan is building an economy based off an an educated workforce.

Pakistan is ruled by a military dictator and has only one major export - terrorism.

Rather than despise India, why not despise "American" corporations that look for cheap labor where it can be found? And BTW, India has an official no first strike policy on nukes and is controlled by a civilian elected government. I trust India more with nukes than most other countries out there including the US and China.

13. I think there's a difference
Edited on Wed Oct-11-06 05:28 PM by fujiyama
between hating a country, and hating "US" corporations that take jobs over there.

It makes no sense to hate workers in other countries for taking advantage of opportunities that come their way.

14. That's beyond ridiculous
and anyone with a shred of decency knows what you said is wrong.

Try despising the people who outsourced the jobs and NOT the people who are just trying to make a living.

Oh, and here you go:
