Bush raises issue of journalist's death with Putin
Bush raises issue of journalist's death with Putin
Tue Oct 10, 2006 3:50pm ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President George W. Bush raised with Russian President Vladimir Putin the murder of Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya and Putin told him her death was a blow to Russia, the White House said on Tuesday.

Bush and Putin spoke by phone on Monday about North Korea's reported nuclear test, but the first few minutes of the call dealt with the journalist's execution-style slaying in Moscow on Saturday, White House spokesman Tony Snow said.

Snow said Putin told Bush "the murder was a personal tragedy and a blow to Russia and raised questions about a free media and security for journalists."

Politkovskaya's funeral was held on Tuesday. She had reported human rights abuses in Chechnya and described Putin as a cynical liar.

So far I've only been able to get my people to lock them up, but I keep telling them that if we know what is good for us we'll start toasting them. I'm thinking, toast 2 or 3 of them and the rest will shut up pretty damn quick. So anyway, how did you get it to work for you?

12. You kidding me? He has murdered more journalists in Iraq than in
any other war theater. Remember the missle they sent into the journalists hotel early in the war? They smoked dozens of journalists.

6. Bush "raised the issue" - as in what way?
The article repeatedly quotes Putin, but there's no hint as to what Bush had to say -
there is NO indication that Bush expressed regret, condolences, concerns for maintaining a free press. Bush finds death amusing - remember his joking about Karla Fay Tucker and mimicking her begging him (to no avail) for her life?

I wouldn't be at all surprised if the jerk didn't snidely congratulate Putin on getting rid of a reporter who had criticized Putin.

13. Good. This story deserves more attention.
Politkovskaya was just one of about half a dozen journalists who have been murdered with the crime mysteriously never being solved.

It's a shame what happened to her. She was a brave woman, and the world was a better place with her in it alive. Putin is right, it most definitely raises questions about a free media. And I suspect he is a major part of the problem.

Oh, but wait, didn't shrub say he gazed into pooty-poots soul and saw light and goodness or something equally retarded? I guess to someone as dark and devious as shrub, Putin would look like a beacon of light. Pretty sad.
