Intel Chief Warns on Health Care System (jobs will leave)
WASHINGTON (AP) - Intel Corp. chairman Craig Barrett warned Tuesday that U.S. jobs will continue to move offshore at a rapid pace unless corporate America exerts its power to force the health care industry to adopt systems that will cut costs and improve efficiency.

"Every job that can be moved out of the United States will be moved out ... because of health care costs," which averaged more than $6,000 per person in 2004, Barrett said at a conference sponsored by eHealth Initiative, a non-profit coalition of health information technology interest groups.

Employers should demand that hospitals select standardized record systems to lower costs or take their company's business elsewhere, Barrett told a crowd of 400 at a hotel ballroom.

"The (health care) system is out of control, it's unstable, it's basically bankrupt, it gets worse each year and all we do is tinker around the edges when what we need are major fixes," Barrett said, adding that health care costs make it increasingly difficult for U.S. companies to compete with rivals abroad.

1. As if the healthcare industry will listen.
They likes their money more.

So, let them at intel ship off jobs. Help in the assisting of the crash of the GLOBAL economy. It'll render everyone in the SAME boat.

They do have a point; the healthcare system is grossly out of control. When premiums go up 19% every YEAR, 5 years running, and you find out the twerps running the show shrink hours of operation, there's a BIG problem afoot. The healthcare industry really needs to correct itself or risk bankruptcy.

3. It's ironic. Health care is killing us.

So the next time a politicial talks of restoring America's edge in the world, see what they say (and find their record) on healthcare.

The government has GOT to intervene.

If not, then may wal-mart's $4 prescription initiative have an effect. The system has GOT to be fixed.

4. Get health care off the backs of business.
Make America competitive again.

The health and well-being of Americans is a primary responsibility of our federal government which has utterly dropped the ball.

With national health, employees are free to work at the job that best suits them. Employers are free to hire the best worker. Right now, health care costs and concerns govern every employment choice.

Federal health care = competitive American businesses.

5. ya know it's corrupt when corporate tycoons start complaining
I was allowed to put 'major health care reform' as a plank at precinct as a DCCM and it made it to county, then softened at state Dem convention.

That was 1992. Look what Republicans did to Hillary. Look what moderate Dems have allowed or aided them to do to this country since.

It's a long hard fight. And doubly hard when you find your brothers and sisters fighting you to move the center further to the right. Health care reform may happen if we get the media back or after a collapse.

8. Amen. It's time to stop putting band aids on our health care
system, and go for the surgery that will remove the private for profit tumor once and for all, and replace it with single payer universal health care.

7. Would you like your healthcare regular, or decaf?
Don't know if it is accurate, but I've heard that there is more healthcare in a cup of coffee at Starbucks than there is coffee. And more healthcare in a GM car than steel.

Sounds like a sure-fire way to make US-made products cost more than those from countries that don't have our "problem." Either that, or a way to ensure that US companies routinely stick it to workers for the reason that they need to stay "competitive." Funny how the US work week is longer, vacations shorter and retirement age higher than in most of the rest of the developed world.

10. The corporate types always go for band-aid solutions like
better coordination of records and compulsory health insurance when the problem is that the whole system is broken.

This is NOT a case of "If it ain't broke don't fix it,"

Indeed, this is a case of "If it's totally broke, why the hell ain't you fixin' it?"
