Army Meets Recruiting Goal
The Army is ending its best recruiting year since 1997 and expecting similar success in 2007, despite the weight of grim war news from Iraq, Army Secretary Francis Harvey said Thursday.

In an Associated Press interview, Harvey said the Army will enlist its 80,000th soldier on Friday, reaching its goal for the year with eight days to spare. That is a considerable turnaround from last year when the Army missed its target for the first time since 1999 and by the widest margin in more than two decades.

By the end of the budget year on Sept. 30, the active-duty Army expects to have a total of nearly 504,000 soldiers, up from 492,000 a year ago. A year from now it hopes to reach its goal of 512,000, but that will not happen if recruiting slips again. Harvey indicated he expects recruiting to remain strong in the coming year.

3. Quantity trumps, quality dumps.
If true, it's shades of McNamara's "100,000" (which was really 300,000+) program for his soldier-short Viet Nam war. Didn't they just raise the enlistment age to 42? What happens when a plot of the increasing enlistee ages and their IQs cross (like the Fahrenheit and Celsius scales at -40 degrees)?

..."The 153rd Incontinence Batallion" as they bravely capture Fallujah in a desperate, last-ditch attempt to lock up supplies of Iraqi Geritol and Matlock tapes.

24. If you can believe their numbers
The Army allows no more than 4 percent of recruits to have scored in the lowest category (category 4) of the ASVAB test. For many years the Army had a self-imposed 2-percent limit, but raised it to 4 percent in 2005. The congressional ceiling has been set at 20 percent since fiscal 1983. In the late 1970s, as many as 45 percent of Army recruits could be drawn from category 4.

This dumb draftee (who had less then sterling dealings with recruiters) believes recruiters can and do tweak test numbers to reach their quotas. You know what I mean, Vern?

5. And because the Army says so it must be a fact
Edited on Thu Sep-21-06 05:50 PM by bluestateguy
Why doesn't the WP just copy the official Army press release and just make it easy for themselves.

One of Bush's pollsters just pleaded guilty to faking data. The same thing can easily be done with military recruitment numbers too.

13. Is this the new, reduced goal?
Maybe they added recruits from the skinheads and KKK type groups, because they lowered the standards for enlistment ... you know, drug convictions, felonious crimes, etc. ...

15. And most of that goal was made by...
Forceably re-enlisting the folks whose enlistment was up. "Whether you re-enlist or not, you're staying in Falujah for the foreseeable future. So why not sign here and get a bonus?"

18. That's what I meant
:hi:

Current soldiers are not being allowed to leave, even if their contract is up. I would not at all be surprised that those who are strong armed into re-enlisting because they will be forced to stay anyway are getting counted as "voluntary recruits."
