Film Shows Youths Training to Fight for Jesus
http://abcnews.go.com/WNT/print?id=2455343

Speaking in tongues, weeping for salvation, praying for an end to abortion and worshipping a picture of President Bush -- these are some of the activities at Pastor Becky Fischer's Bible camp in North Dakota, "Kids on Fire," subject of the provocative new documentary, "Jesus Camp."

"I want to see them as radically laying down their lives for the gospel as they are in Palestine, Pakistan and all those different places," Fisher said. "Because, excuse me, we have the truth."

"A lot of people die for God," one camper said, "and they're not afraid."

"We're kinda being trained to be warriors," said another, "only in a funner way."

:wtf:

36. I think my hunch that a child was coerced to copy those anthrax letters
and address those envelopes, is gaining more plausibility. The FBI claimed they were looking for someone in their 60s because of the traditional way the letters were formed, but I believe that in certain right-wing Christian schools, traditional letter-writing is being taught. And this school would be tops on my list.

In the anthrax letter, that "G" has too much of a child's signature. A cutsy "G" or a "G" that at first was mistaken for a "6" when it was being copied off an original. Why go through so much trouble to fake the letter? By the time the envelope was open, the damage would already have been done.

74. Actually you are correct
I will not mention the name of the "certain right-wing Christian school" since you did not. I learned how to write in one. My older daughter did too. Our handwriting is so similar we could easily forge each other's signatures.

My younger daughter and my husband both went to public schools and their writing bears no resemblance to ours at all.

Again, you are correct. It has nothing to do with age, but where you first learned penmanship.

63. one could take it that would be the reaction to his message
it's not how Constantine who stated he had a dream of conquering by the sign of the cross. Pacifism is the enemy of those in power. For pacifism brings down those who wish others to kill for their own agenda. The Quakers have been harrassed and even murdered for refusing to pick up a weapon, to kill the ever changing list of enemies. During the Civil War, Quakers were murdered. I believe, the words mean that his messages would cause such bloodshed. And, he was right, it has caused such bloodshed. I do not believe Jesus would have wanted a cross to be an emblem of his message. His death, as so many wanted to focus on, is not what he wanted to be represented, but his life and his message.

57. Maybe you missed it, but
Edited on Mon Sep-18-06 10:32 AM by kgfnally
Christians say far worse about people like me all the time. In fact, they actually passed a law in my state (oh and, and eleven others) saying I couldn't get married. They tried to get a law passed in my town- a local ordinance, fortunately shot down- that would have made it impossible for me to even live with someone I cared about by nullifying my ability to enter into any joint contract with anyone of the same sex. Since one of their is running for governor in MI, I'm sure we'll be seeing a statewide version- maybe another amendment!- should he win. They're also trying to get the law they got passed- the marriage amendment- to additionally include (which in context means forbid) joint health benefits provided by private employers, and not just companies contracted with the state. But, I'm a federal employee, which means all that is forbidden me already anyway- again, thanks in large (perhaps operative) part by christians.

Maybe you missed it, but that little cross around their necks means, to me, "I might beat you up or kill you," and no, I'm not engaging in hyperbole here. Thanks to christians- be they real, or false- I can't even hold hands with someone I care about in a public place without fear of being physically attacked. Therefore, I must, for my own person safety and well-being, treat everyone I see wearing a cross or sporting a jesusfish on their car or loudly proclaiming themselves to be a christian as a potential threat to me, personally.

More people need to be made aware of just how very, very miserable christians are making the lives of some people- people like me. For the record, no, I am NOT comfortable in the presence of christians in numbers large or small. In such a situation, I would not feel safe and would most certainly feel under threat. I have little to no respect for the religion as a whole, and particularly the fact that various sects even exist (they can't even make up their minds on an agreed interpretation of their own holy book!); anyone giving money to the religion is promoting an organization which, by and large, would like to see me and people like me wiped off the face of the Earth.

If any of this is offensive or considered insensitive to any christians, guess what? They have the behavior of other christians to thank for that. When they stop making me and people like me into second class citizens, I'll consider- consider- changing my tune.

Oh, and I'm not going to say something needs to be "done" about them- that's what they say about me.

59. You are right to be afraid
of the more virulent adherents of sects such as Christian Dominionists, who have stated that the death penalty should apply to homosexuals, and also be used for adulterers, and heretics. I would no doubt be in danger as well, due to my long time friendship with gay couples, and my out-spokenness as a woman.

These people are crazy, they scare the daylight out of me, and they infest the highest levels of our government. The church I attended while growing up was a United Methodist, which preached love, tolerance, and that we are all supposed to love each other regardless of race, sex, national origin, or anything else.

These people are a far cry from the ones I knew growing up. I don't blame you, kgfnally, for feeling the way you do. You deserve the full rights enjoyed by everybody else in the United States. Anything less is second class citizenship, and there is absolutely no reason to keep you from marrying any adult you want to.

The country would be a great deal better off if you, and others like you, could enjoy and participate in life as freely as anybody else. There would be less tension, less hatred, and a great deal more love and friendship. I pray the day will come soon, my friend. In the meantime, we need to keep these dangerous, spiteful people from taking over more of our government.

What difference will it make if we are executed by Christians extremists, or Muslim extrememists, if the result is death? Or if the result is a hell on earth, which is what a country ruled by the far right of any religious faith would create?

I know plenty of other witches and pagans who have been outright fired for bullshit reasons just because they were pagans of some stripe or another. None of me or my coreligionists can openly acknowledge our faith in a public fashion for fear of reprisals. We've had to deal with protestors at our rites and been harrassed at meetups before, it's ridiculous especially considering we just want to be left in peace and we don't do ANYTHING to them.

Sorry about that. I actually have an immense amount of respect for Jesus Christ and I have felt bad all day long about disparaging him with the lion comment. As for the assholes that equate worshipping a picture of George Bush to being a good Christian... well...fuck you.

85. The problem is
that these types of people and organizations are increasing in number. One of the posters above sums it up nicely in demostrating what it is like to have to try and live around these people with their hatred of gays or anything not male, protestant and heterosexual. They are working toward establishing a theocracy and the MSM, this administration, the Republicans and way too many Democrats are more than happy to help them do it.

89. No arguments here. I have a definite problem with these people as well.
Unfortunately, these assholes make confrontation inevitable which, IMO, is their whole agenda. I think it has to do with a prophesized "war against the lamb". You see, many of these people are legitimately neurotic and require external "evidence" in the form of realized prophesies to support the neurotic constructions that their lives revolve around. And some are just legitimately assholes. Regardless, their zealotry makes confrontation inevitable. Getting them out of government needs to be a priority. The trick will be making war against them without making war against God/Jesus. Regardless of your religious/philosophical views, for many reasons, it doesn't seem like a good idea to put the Democratic party on the wrong side of a war against Christ.

I have a boss at work and he's old-school conservative. Ex-Army colonel, Vietnam vet, reasonably devout Catholic. I can talk to him about the Constitution, though. He is anti-abortion on a personal level, but his response in regards to outlawing it are "it's not the government's damn business!"

I can deal with that, and in some ways I can actually agree with him on more than one topic. He's somewhat distainful of us "frothing liberals", but he avoids the neocons like the plague, so I just spend my time debunking the "liberal media" myth, which he seems to not have much of an answer for. :-)

These bible-thumping types will take the oath of office, then immediatly vote their own brand of 'christian values' on America.

Can't we impeach Bush simply for violating his oath of office?

I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.

Where is the love? The rose petals? Loving ALL people no matter who they are? There should be no room for hate. They should be loving everyone not just the unborn. One would like to think a movie about children at a relgious camp should be dull enough to put one to sleep. It should be cute enough that it wouldn't even need a rating for viewership. The clip that I saw indicates some very disturbed kids, adults that created them to be disturbed and shows a generation of very violent mixed up kids that will go to any extreme for their cause. Isn't it odd they seem to immulate the same mentality of another group that * condemns every day--this same * that they worship in their madhouse camp.

"This is an enormous youth movement," said Lauren Sandler, a secular, liberal feminist from New York City who spent months among the believers researching her new book, "Righteous."

Correct me if I'm wrong, the context of that paragraph makes Christians look pristine next to a "Secular, liberal, feminist" which most hardcore jesus lickers think are workings of the anti-christ.

78. Rosie O'Donnell got smacked down by Christian conservatives last week...
...because on "The View" she opined that ANY sort of fundamentalist/extreme religion is problematic, and that we in the United States were probably much more in danger from extreme Christianity than from extreme Islam. Elizabeth, of course, was offended by this, as were a bunch of right-wingers. Snort, harrumph harrumph.

I hope Rosie's having a good laugh today, because guess who's doing this doc about the film? Yep, ABC TV. Elizabeth is going to plotz. (How on Earth do sane Christians explain that scene of kids bowing and praying in front of George Bush?) The camp's military rhetoric dovetails perfectly with nutjobs like that guy in this week's Top 10 Conservative Idiots that took out the clinic with his car.

87. These people are just plain SICK!
Little terrors on rampage in "Jesus Camp"

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Few personality-trait combinations are more obnoxious than narrow-mindedness and condescension -- especially in children.

The compelling documentary "Jesus Camp," which Magnolia Pictures opened in select cities Friday ahead of its New York and L.A. bows September 22, demonstrates how those qualities are being cultivated in a generation of pintsize proselytizers. Beyond their deadly earnestness, these children of the evangelical Christian right are being groomed as soldiers in a self-declared culture war to reclaim America for Christ.

Those who have been born only once might find it easy to laugh off Jesus-themed hip-hop numbers or Adam & Eve Barbie dolls. But filmmakers Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady, who also focused on children in last year's poignant "The Boys of Baraka," provide a fascinating glimpse of kids' role in the evangelical movement's political agenda.

Pastor Becky Fischer granted the filmmakers access to her Kids on Fire summer camp, a 5-year-old program in North Dakota where first-graders to teens are variously entertained, broken down and preached to. Wielding everything from PowerPoint to plush toys to illustrate the wages of sin, the impassioned Fischer has a clear-eyed view of children as malleable material, ripe for the inculcating. When they're not speaking in tongues, pledging allegiance to the Christian flag or blessing a cardboard cutout of George W. Bush, the kids rally round to hear Fischer and others entreat them to "join the war," "fix the sick world" and fight abortion (tiny fetus dolls serve as preachers' aids).

similarity with the Taliban training videos we've all, no doubt, seen, I'll ask a question.

The article doesn't mention a weapon. Not even a rock.

Was violence as a means of fighting mentioned at the camp? Seems like people are feeling as threatened by expressions of zeal and prayer as they are of bombs and guns. As though many didn't read past the title.

Hey, and we can let these people move into our homes, because God said they could, and when we realize we can't do anything about it, we can throw rocks at them and blow up their churches with homemade gas bombs. Oh, and we can train some suiciders of our own! Woohoo! Let the fun begin!

I wonder what color burka we'll have to wear? I do look good in baby blue, but Afghanistan already took that color. I hope it's not white. I look so washed out in white. Oh, what does it matter. Nobody will be able to see me anyway.

and find those sort of displays in Church disturbing as well. I'm fortunate to attend a Church that is not "issue oriented" and that doesn't dabble in politics even a little bit. We have a congregation that is a mixture of republicans and democrats, and nobody makes politics an issue. I'm dismayed that there are so few evangelical churches in America like mine, churches that don't sell God off as a Republican.
