Judge: School Voucher Law Unconstitutional
DENVER Dec. 3 — A judge declared Colorado's new school voucher law unconstitutional Wednesday, saying it illegally strips local school boards of control over education.
Denver District Judge Joseph Meyer said the voucher law, the first in the nation since the U.S. Supreme Court ruled last year that voucher programs were acceptable, issued an injunction barring implementation of the voucher plan.

8. OK, you two, it may be fundieland, but it's my fundieland.
Mine, Michael Merrifield's, and all the fine liberals that pepper this area. We need a liberal invasion to counter the one by the Focus people in the early 90's. :D

9. the Focus'll go bankrupt soon anyway
and we'll be busy taking over the "family values" once the Owens latest scandal gets blown away by the local media. Even Colorado Springs fundies would want to stay out of this one, but can't.

11. Dobson flew in a private jet to Alabama to support old Roy Moore.
Hubby saw him at one the general aviation places waiting to board. I don't know if it was rented, leased or owned by Focus. But he wasn't flying commercial.

10. I Remember.....
....when one of your elected officials said on the radio that "the only thing they let Democrats do in El Paso County is pay taxes", or something to that effect.

How can you stand it around the Combover Twins - Joel Hefley and Ed Bircham???? :-)

13. I ignore them.
Joel wants prayer in schools. Maybe I can find some Wiccan friends to help with that.

6. This is the Argument So Many Have Failed to See
Edited on Wed Dec-03-03 04:01 PM by Crisco
On the pro-public education side and pro-voucher side, both.

Private schools have no accountability to taxpayers. In order to constitutionally implement vouchers, private school boards would have to come under public control. If you want to make a pro-voucher person's head spin, just ask them how much government interference they want in their kids' private school.

14. excellent point
vouchers are just part of the "Christian" right's strategy to destroy public education and force everyone into religious institutions.

16. the problem
with the pro-voucher people is their focus on 'parents' choice. Sorry, it's the tax payers choice. I'm a property tax payer without children in the public school system and they don't seem to recognize that I should have a say about my tax dollars.

Although I don't use the public school system (no kids for now) I've paid property taxes for many years. The benefit to me is that the tax money was used wisely and one of the top rated schools in the state is in my neighborhood. People are working hard to move into this neighborhood and as a result my property values have increased 4 times. That means my taxes have also increased, but I'm happy to pay it. It goes right back into the school and my neighborhood.

It's an added benefit to a civic duty. I have no duty or obligation to pay for the private education of anyone's children. I do have a civic duty where public education is concerned. Vouchers are a plan to take my tax dollars and put that money in the hands of religeous and private institutions. It robs me and It robs my neighborhood. No thanks. Schools are linked to property values. I hope home owners wise up on this issue.
