Bush gets no bounce from terror arrests

WASHINGTON, Aug. 29 (UPI) -- A new Harris Poll finds no evidence of a bounce for U.S. President Bush from the arrests in Britain of a group suspected of plotting to blow up passenger jets.

A poll of 1,000 adults conducted from Aug. 18 to Aug. 21 found 34 percent approve of Bush's job performance, while 65 percent disapprove. Those numbers were almost identical to a poll conducted in early August before the arrests.

The survey did find terrorism has moved up as an issue, with 3 percent in early August saying it is the most important, while 9 percent did in the later poll. The war in Iraq remains the top issue with 28 percent naming it.

8. That is the scary part.
But with the number of people who already believe that the government was involved with the 911 attack, he should probably go no further.

Of course he could always roll up bin Laden.

6. Other poll(s) are reporting . . .
Edited on Wed Aug-30-06 09:14 AM by MrModerate
A substantial bounce (Sorry I don't have a link, but it might be WaPo/CNN -- I'll go look) up to 40% approval and up to 50% approval on "handling terrorism." I was afraid this was going to be the story. Good to hear the bounce is not being seen across the polling landscape.

Let's see if Rumsfeld and Cheney's recent ejecta on the topic have any effect by next week. Since they're clearly starting a push on the "Dems love terrorists" theme, I think we'll learn valuable things about where the electorate stands based on whether the push works or not.

ON EDIT: The poll I was thinking of is the ABC/WaPo.

7. Harris and AP/Ipsos/Reid are the only polls worth paying attention to
and then only for general trends.

It seems Stupid has a solid core of supporters above what I'd estimated in the past, which was 30%. I suppose that's because it's taking some of the greedy who still have jobs a little longer to realize he's been bad for business, and that they'd be much better off without their small tax cut but with a financially solvent country and a stronger dollar.

The rest are backwash, either delusional or so stupid the positive result is for themselves for having recognized the name.

10. Hopefully that 34% IS the bounce and the real numbers
have sunk even further. I had one encouraging freepfamily email last weekend, but of course last night got one from an obvious backwash. Shocking how almost 1/3 of the country can be so deluded.

16. So can I bring chap stick on a plane now?
The good news is that since it isn't working they've stopped it. The bad news is mentioned above, they are going to have to do something really serious now.
