Katherine Harris says failure to elect Christians will `legislate sin'

ORLANDO, Fla. _Rep. Katherine Harris said this week that God did not intend for the United States to be a "nation of secular laws" and that a failure to elect Christians to political office will allow lawmaking bodies to "legislate sin."

The remarks, published in the weekly journal of the Florida Baptist State Convention, unleashed a torrent of criticism from political and religious officials.

Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., said she was "disgusted" by the comments "and deeply disappointed in Rep. Harris personally."

...

State Rep. Irv Slosberg, D-Boca Raton, demanded an apology, saying the statements were "outrageous, even by her standards.

...

Ruby Brooks, a veteran Tampa Bay Republican activist, said Harris' remarks "were offensive to me as a Christian and a Republican."

John W. Dean:
'Michelle Goldberg's study of the rise of Christian Nationalism,
and its adherents' strategy to use the courts to further their agenda'

Posted on Friday, August 25 @ 09:50:22 EDT

If more Americans would read works like Michelle Goldberg's
"Kingdom Coming: The Rise of Christian Nationalism",
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0393060942/thesmirkingchimp
the longevity of our democracy, as we know it, would be more assured.
I say this because the more people who understand the thinking and agenda
of the growing forces of "Christian nationalism,"
the less likely it will be that these forces will succeed.
Not many people want to go where Christian nationalists want to take the country.

Michelle Goldberg, a journalist who writes for Salon, defines Christian nationalism http://www.talk2action.org/story/2006/5/11/151212/239
as the "Christian worldview" that envisions Christianity governing
"every aspect of public and private life, and that all --
government, science, history, culture, and relationships --
must be understood according to the dictates of scripture."
Christian nationalists have "biblically correct positions on every issue,
from gay marriage to income tax rates."

These believers are also known as dominionists.
Dominionism is a theology drawn from God's instruction to Adam in Genesis (1:26-27)
to take dominion over the animate and inanimate world. As Goldberg explains,
"dominionism is derived from a theocratic sect called Christian Reconstructionism,
which advocates replacing American civil law with Old Testament biblical law."

Christian Nationalists dominate today's Republican Party.
Goldberg conducted her research much as an anthropologist might;
she traveled to Texas, Colorado, West Virginia and other places to mix and mingle
with Christian nationalists at the grass- roots level, in their churches, conventions
and other places where they congregate.
She asked questions and listened to answers. In her book, Goldberg cites a 2002 study
regarding the "strong influence" of the religious right "in eighteen state Republican parties"
and "moderate influence in twenty-six others." As she no doubt correctly suspects,
"their control has only expanded since then."

Katherine Harris, President Bush's favorite Florida election official and now
a Republican candidate for the Senate,
recently provided a good example of Christian nationalist thinking,
when asked what role people of faith should play in politics and government.
She responded as a Christian nationalist might, including advice on how to
evade the law that prohibits using tax free funds for political purposes.

Pat Robertson is a central figure, and probably the best known figure,
in the development of Christian nationalism.

Edited on Sat Aug-26-06 08:33 AM by CBHagman
The Bible is actually rather spotty in the descriptions of hell, aside from terms like "eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels" (Matthew 25:41), and that's for people who withheld help from their fellow human beings.

It's Dante who got down to details about ranking sins and corresponding punishments, but his work is NOT part of the Scripture.

Harris campaign awaits her cash
Edited on Sat Aug-26-06 06:56 AM by DoYouEverWonder
August 26, 2006

TAMPA - After months of hearing members of even her own party second-guess her run for the U.S. Senate, Katherine Harris said she would pump $10-million of her own money into her financially strapped campaign.

In an emotional announcement on national TV in March, Harris said she would use every penny her late father had left her.

Minutes later, while still in the New York studio where she made the announcement, Harris received a call from her sister. She and their brother were furious that she had not told them she was going to spend family money on her campaign, according to her former senior consultant Ed Rollins, who was with her that night.

In the days that followed, several former staffers, including Rollins, said Harris learned she would not directly receive any inheritance from her father. Instead, his assets, reported to be as much as $100-million, were left to her mother, Harriet.

Will boost coffers with inheritance
By Brendan Farrington, Associated Press | March 17, 2006

TALLAHASSEE -- Representative Katherine Harris will fight rather than quit her US Senate campaign, saying she'll spend $10 million she inherited from her father to revive her bid, which has been set back by her ties to a bribery scandal ... ''I'm staying. I'm in this race. I'm going to win," Harris said Wednesday night on Fox News's ''Hannity & Colmes." ''I'm going to put everything on the line" ... Her father, banker George Harris, died in January. After the funeral, she dedicated her campaign to him. Rep. Katherine Harris says She Will "Not Own Anything" When Inheritance is Spent

MIAMI (AP) -- Representative Katherine Harris says she "won't have anything left" after spending $10 million of her personal inheritance to fund her US Senate campaign. Harris plans to spend money she inherited after her father's death in January on her campaign. She talked about that decision on ABC News' "Nightline" program aired last night and said, "Seriously, I won't have anything left" ... http://www.firstcoastnews.com/news/florida/news-article.aspx?storyid=54264

... Burroughs, a former staffer with Campus Crusade for Christ, said that in the last month Harris has been deeply moved by the .. book The Joy of Supernatural Thinking ... Just as her campaign was starting to turn around, federal prosecutors revealed that a defense contractor at the center of a bribery case had given Harris more than $30,000 in illegal contributions ... Campaign advisers understood Harris wanted to put the inheritance in the race, but now say she won't have access to that money until after her mother's death. On Tuesday, she clarified to the Times that the money would come from her current assets, including selling real estate. "My dad didn't leave me that money. This is what I have," said Harris, who is married to a millionaire ... "And it came to pass that in that day, as the sun setteth in the east, a certain women of an ungodly house heard the lord speaketh unto her, saying: "thine right hand shalt not know what thine left doeth. And ye shall counteth thine W's twain, saith the lord."

And it came to pass that there was much trouble in the land. And the W dideth cause much knashing of teeth and tribulation. And the lord spake unto her again and He was sorely vexed, saying: "damn bitch, can't you count?!?!?!"

44. More.......
Harris said the separation of church and state is a "lie we have been told" to keep religious people out of politics.

In reality, "we have to have the faithful in government" because that is God's will. Separating religion and politics is "so wrong because God is the one who chooses our rulers," she said.

"And if we are the ones not actively involved in electing those godly men and women," then "we're going to have a nation of secular laws. That's not what our founding fathers intended and that's (sic) certainly isn't what God intended."

And in the front cover will be a microphone, a radio transmitter, and a solar cell. Remember to speak clearly so make the job easier on the NSA

:puke:

One of the biggest lies, IMO. At least atheists and other religions don't have the automatic forgiveness of God if they just "feel bad" about their conduct...they actually have to live with themselves, unlike Christians who just get to be forgiven by their all-powerful deity.

(Apologies to the true Christians who might be offended by this post...in truth, it is only those who loudly proclaim their Christianity while their acts make clear that they are nothing of the kind that I refer to)

The problem is that she looks pretty hot from the feet to the neck... then it's BLAM! "Ah, my eyes!" time.

They say beauty is only a light switch away, but then you catch that smell of burning brimstone and pus and sour milk, and :puke:

Rodney Dangerfield, may he rest in peace, would call her a "two bagger. You put a bag over your head in case the bag over her head breaks!"

If I sensed your meaning correctly about what a real Christian is (beatitudes, that sort?), then Gandhi was infinitely more "Christian" than this batshit bitch will ever be.

He was a devout Hindu, but his beliefs and actions also have endlessly more in common with how most would define a true Christian than Harris and her ilk ever will.

My personal tifoil Harris-theory is that she's being

has ZERO credibility when she finally spills the beans
about the 2000 Florida election.

>>University of Virginia political analyst Larry Sabato said the comments will appeal to Christian fundamentalists who typically turn out for Republican primaries.

But he said the strong evangelical tone could alienate non-Christians and more moderate Republicans who had been thinking of supporting Harris.

No, that's insulting to witches.

Anyway, if she's talking religion, I thought the Bible forbade people to steal (e.g. elections), bear false witness (e.g. about how many people voted for Bush), or to take God's name in vain (as she's doing here).

Many people throughout the world will NEVER forgive her for her role in the 2000 election.

57. Pride goeth before a Katherine Harris.
And it is pride that is the source of some of the ugliest and most spiritually dangerous sins. Grab a copy of C.S. Lewis's Mere Christianity and see what it has to say about developing too high an opinion of yourself.

For that is really what I see some Christians doing. I fear that instead of saying, "I'm a Christian, and I'm going to follow God and depend on Him and pray for guidance," they say, "I'm a Christian, and therefore what I do is virtuous." No, no, no, no, no, no! I've seen people tangle themselves up in lies and folly with that kind of attitude.

It's patently arrogant to regard those outside your personal faith as incapable of virtue. Again, as with Ehud Olmert proclaiming that no one could teach the Israelis about morality, it's a source of downfall.

61. My Christian creed
"I'm a Christian, and I know where I'm spending eternity -- in Hell, where I deserve to be exiled for my myriad sins against God and Man alike."

However, since I have no belief in things preternatural to begin with, and absolutely no certainty in God, Hell, or an afterlife, the point isn't just moot, it means I'm doubly-damned.

But I'm a "prayin' atheist", and I'll say a Glory Be for ol' Kathy's soul. Honor among sinners and all that.

--p!
Shouldn't this be in Religion/Atheism/Theology?

about religious whackos... they seem to honestly believe that all good can ONLY come from God, I.E., nonchristians are inherantly evil. That nonchristians somehow CANNOT be good and/or moral.
My response to that attitude is one that I cannot in good conscience say when children might be within earshot.
