170 dead, and the only thing the news is reporting is John Mark Karr......

Report: No survivors on Russian airliner
By ANNA MELNICHUK, Associated Press Writer 17 minutes ago
KIEV, Ukraine - A Russian passenger jet carrying at least 170 people crashed Tuesday in Ukraine after sending a distress signal, killing all aboard, authorities said. A Russian news agency said officials had ruled out terrorism, but the cause of the crash was still unclear, with various officials citing turbulence, lightning and a fire on board.

The Interfax news agency reported that 39 of the passengers were children, although Russian and Ukrainian government officials offered differing figures.
The plane crashed near the Ukrainian city of Donetsk, about 400 miles east of Kiev, officials said.

"Unfortunately, we believe that no one managed to survive," Russian Emergency Situations Ministry spokesman Irina Andriyanova said in televised comments.
Andriyanova said there were 171 people aboard: 160 passengers, including six children, and 11 crew members. Tetyana Lytvynova, a spokeswoman for Ukraine's Emergency Situations Ministry, however, said there were 160 passengers and 10 crew members on board. The discrepancy could not immediately be explained.

14. yup, anytime i turn it to the news, all i see is that
and as usual with this type of reporting, there isn't even really any new or important info concerning the case. it's just a bunch of talking heads speculating.

7. Oh Fuck this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have an Aeroflot TU-154 flight scheduled out of Moscow next week. I am switching to SAS and let a driver take me into Russia from Norway. I've been nervous since that Aeroflot flight burst into flames on the runway a couple of months ago. These Russians need to care for their planes. Too much stress anticipating a TU-154 flight. This crash convinced me to go the long way around.

13. are crashes from Russia more common than others ?
Edited on Wed Aug-23-06 12:37 AM by JI7
it seems i read about plane crashes happening there more than other places. of course it could partly be the weather.

i don't know much about this specific airline either.

very sad .

15. well
I remember woring on a proposal for some flight equipment for a Russian company. We were told that what we were proposing was to $$ too fancy. We were suprised that they didnt consider an inflight shutdown as a major event. If it restarted, there was no action taken as far as maintenance or inspection whatever... scary.
