Calendars Show Armitage Met Reporter (Valerie Plame case)
Calendars Show Armitage Met Reporter

Tuesday August 22, 2006 1:16 AM

By MATT APUZZO and JOHN SOLOMON

Associated Press Writers

WASHINGTON (AP) - Then-Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage met with Washington Post reporter Bob Woodward in mid-June 2003, the same time the reporter has testified an administration official talked to him about CIA employee Valerie Plame.

Armitage's official State Department calendars, provided to The Associated Press under the Freedom of Information Act, show a one-hour meeting marked ``private appointment'' with Woodward on June 13, 2003.

Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald has investigated whether Bush administration officials intentionally revealed Plame's identity as a one-time CIA covert operative to punish her husband, former ambassador Joseph Wilson, for criticizing the administration's march to war with Iraq.

When contacted at home Monday night, Woodward declined to discuss his meeting with Armitage or the identity of his source in the CIA leak case. Instead, he referred to his statement last year that he had a ``casual and offhand'' discussion about Plame with an unidentified administration official in mid-June 2003.

2. I wish reporters would quit painting this as an outing to get back at
Wilson instead of an independent effort to destroy the CIA WMD tracking operation. They don't give a rat's ass about getting back at Wilson (well, maybe a little icing on the cake). The ticket is destroying WMD tracking which may well have cut into their REAL business. The Bush Crime Family makes big money selling WMDs around the world...think they want Valerie Plame and Company snooping around?

4. PNAC or not Armitage has never been in their inner circle
You could almost see this one coming from 3 years ago-they have run out of expendable crew members so they throw Armitage under the bus (tired of that saying yet?). Not surprising he is in the Powell camp anyway.

6. My thought, too
as if Armitage would have cared one way or another about what Wilson said after his trip. The folks who had the most to lose were the ones who went after Plame. Armitage didn't really have a dog in this fight, he was just following orders.

both Bob's (that would be Woodward/Novakula) have refused to publicly identify who their sources were even though they have been given the release to do so.

Woodward has said he received a written release from his confidentiality obligation to the source and was even asked by his source to tell prosecutors about their conversation. But he has refused to publicly identify the person.

Why are they protecting these sleaze bags who would jeopardize "our national security" for the sole benefit of the War Mongering War Profiteers?

Is having ACCESS more important than the "journalist code of honor" (?) to inform the public of what our government is doing?
