60. YES ... it is a distration
Perhaps not a diliberate one by mastermind Rove but nonetheless a distration. And the administrattion will use this lull in the real news as an opportunity to take some breaths and regroup. They have an incredible nack for siezing distractions (especially these types that can wholely dominate the news). You watch, the media will cling to this story till something good (politically) comes along for the repubs and then switch gears.

Just a Rove conspiracy to take the eye of state-of-the-art fascism. Even Rove ain't THAT good. Some stuff is news, period. And not everyone turns to the political news first thing. I wish some of the people here would get a fucking grip. Next, they'll want the world series cancelled because it's just distracting people from the midterms. Gag.

79. I just returned from New York City after attending a meeting with Rove...
and the executive producers of every television news media outlet in the United States. We were together strategizing how to use the JonBenet Ramsey case as a means to distract the American viewer from the "unfortunate" failings of the Bush Administration. We were all quite sinister, rubbing our palms together with our eyes rolling in their sockets. It was a small room, too, filled with great quantities of cigarette smoke. Now you know the evil plan we're hatching.

143. NO NO NO
I AGREE WITH derby378, sure, some things bush can't cause/change but,

it's odd timing... but the point that is valid is that the media will center on this for WEEKS and months possibly in an over the top way to fill the air time with murder cases instead of things that are affecting all of us every day. This needs covered in a normal manner, because 10 years ago a young girl was murdered, but they'll use it to focus away from Bush.

REMEMBER TOO - the whistleblower of abu ghraib is also talking on shows just before this news was announced. They know that the real harsh news is overwhelming their chances to steal the elections because of public sentiment being clearly over 50% against them, so they will prop this story way outta proportion.

My boyfriend and I argue over this all the time. He didn't know what happened to her. His affair with her, IMHO, was completely irrelevant. What was he supposed to tell them? But aside from that, she was relentlessly accusing of him, trying him in front of everyone as the murderer, and I don't believe she ever admitted she was wrong.

She has gone on many a rant about the Bush administration - she loathes them all.

I like her - it's her job to take the side of the prosecution (because she is a prosecutor) and she usually has someone on her show to take the other side.

However, I can't comment on what she has said about the Ramseys because I have never heard her talk about them.

50. That's not what killed her mother
but it's a shame the killer wasn't found many years ago. What a heartache to deal with the grief of the loss and having people think one of you were guilty of it.

The news is saying Patsy knew about this suspect before she died...but still that was a heavy cloud to live under.

I admit I thought they might have done it under those circumstances. I wasn't sure, didn't think about it a lot. I HOPED if they didn't do it someone would be caught to free the family of that burden and not add to their grief.
If I recall there were even stories that her brother might have done something.

Better late than never, but sooner would have been so much better.

98. I would argue it could have contributed heavily to her death.
Being a cancer survivor, married to a two-time cancer survivor and working for over 20 years with others going through cancer, I can tell you, the journey through the cancer experience is VERY much affected by emotions, unrelated to the cancer itself.

To not only have her daughter murdered, but to be under suspicion, have her husband under suspicion and to know many are looking at your son, if not you or your husband, as the possible murderer of your little girl.

I am amazed she had the strength to fight the battle for over 10 years.

She deserved anguish. She turned her daughter into a whore-wannabe. I still think of little JonBenet shaking her ass for the camera, no doubt her mother taught her that move, it's probably how she became Miss West Virginia.

I'd hope that people would be smart enough to see what the beauty pageant industry is turning young girls into, but they're still too damn dumb to figure it all out...

A break in a murder case. Here's hoping whoever is responsible is brought to justice.

The media will certainly be all over it, but to somehow blame this on Rove seems just a little too tinfoil dontcha think? The guy isn't a god. He's just a smart, evil asshole.

145. Exactly. It was truly disgusting.
All it took was looking at the evidence, and lack thereof, to know the parents and brother were not involved. The media circus in the beginning got people locked into their views and they just refused to let go, despite so much information that built up in the days that followed showing that the family was not guilty -- that they were victims.

I could barely believe how some DUers were flinging about the misinformation as if it were fact, then getting pissed off when corrected, denying that the correctives were accurate. You could give them link after link to the facts and the debunked rumors, but all they did was get snippy and dismissive. Their blinders were so firmly in place, they weren't capable of looking at the facts.

109. Unfortunately, a confession isn't what it used to be.
It's disturbingly common these days to hold a suspect without food or sleep for days at a time, demanding a confession for hours on end, threatening them with imprisonment, until they crack and either take a false offer of leniancy, or actually begin to believe that they did it.

Not saying that that's neccessarily what happened here, but an unscrupulous police officer or officers, interested in retiring a black eye on their department, could conceivably decide that they had as good a suspect as any, and force him into a confession in order to close the case. It's also not impractical to feed someone unreleased details of the crime in order to make a confession sound legitimate.

There's a lot of unanswered questions as yet.

News said he picked her UP FROM SCHOOL, took her to her own basement and attacked her there.

Didn't they find her the next morning, supposedly?

So if that's true then he picks her up from school, goes into her house with her (where were her parents?), takes her to the basement and rapes & kills her and her parents don't find her until the next morning?

WTF?

Either some wrong info is getting out or this is a load of crap.

204. Yes I agree, something not right with what we are hearing.
How could his version of events have happened? Does not make sense.

Also why did the Ramseys not cooperate with police,
not take a lie detector test, get separate attorneys right away?

And I read in the paper today that this fellow they arrested has been obsessed with the Jon Bennett case for years and has told people he served jail time as a suspect in the past, which I do not believe is true. The story gets stranger and stranger.

But I did hear on the news that he had info about the crime that no one else knew except the police and the perp.

Perhaps we are not getting correct info at this point.
Things are not making any sense to me.

Sometimes, a cigar is just a cigar.

If anything, a story like this results in inertia in public opinion in politics. If we get 2 weeks of wall-to-wall JonBenet coverage, it's going to suck all the oxygen out of the atmosphere.

Distraction, yes. But it ISN'T good for the Republicans.

Some Questions Still Remain to be Answered:

1). What is the suspect's connection, if any, to the Ramseys.

2). How did he gain access to their home?

3). Had he visited the Ramsey house in the past?

4). In what capacity or for what purpose?

5). Why did Patsy Ramsey fake a ransom to protect the suspect.

6). Did she believe the suspect did it or her husband?

7). Was the suspect John's partner in crime?

8). Was the suspect Patsy's lover?

The questions have just begun.

Shoes, shoes, the dead mans shoes, who will stand in the dead mans shoes? I remember something

I guess . . . THATS WHAT ITS ALL ABOUT so many awesome responsibilities are

124. We do not know the facts
The District's Attorney's Office does know the facts, and there was apparently enough to justify an arrest. Much of what was reported in the media was speculation, hyped & spun to get higher ratings. Not to mention those "experts" who profited from writing books accusing the family of this crime. The media hounded that family wherever they went, and I would hope at least some would have the grace to apologize. But I'm not betting on it.

118. Very Skeptical
Look, I never want to believe the father or mother are involved in this disgusting tragedy, and certainly it appears, on the surface, that they are not. But until we know what the evidence is against this suspect and the particulars I will not rush to his judgement. A 41 one yr. old second grade school teacher? In Thailand? Imagine this scenario: Wealthy person, accused and convicted in the court of public opinion, makes arrangement with down on his luck no-goodnik to finance his lifestyle in exchange for his agreement to cop to the crime when appropriate. "Admits to certain aspects of the crime known only to the perpetrator?" Facts perhaps provided by his benefactor, the real killer.

I know, it's far-fetched and not overly rational, perhaps better imagined in the minds of a mystery writer. Just a little food for thought..

All for the evidence has, to me, pointed to a coverup by insiders... although I have NEVER thought she was murdered. MOst profilers and coroners have also said this. If someone else did it, or has evidence of who did, that's great. From Day One, I've always said that she's the one who's important.

Again, it will be interesting to see what plays out... because the Boulder cops screwed up the evidence from day one.

138. The fact remains that Patsy Ramsey wrote a fake ransom note.
The fact remains that Patsy Ramsey wrote a fake ransom note, a diatribe of several pages which attempted to shift the blame to "foreign investors" for the murder. The non-sensical note, written in Patsy's distinctive grandiose style with archaisms that she routinely used in her correspondence, also demanded a ransom amount that was exactly the sum of her husband's Christmas bonus that year. Also John was excluded as the writer of the note, Patsy could not be excluded.

If a third party committed or assisted in the murder, then Patsy Ramsey must have had some reason for faking the ransom note, whether it is that she feared her husband was responsible or the Ramseys had some connection to the killer that they were trying to conceal for whatever reason.

153. Here's the Evidence that Patsy Ramsey Wrote Fake Ransom Note
http://www.statementanalysis.com/ramseynote/

JonBenet Ramsey Ransom Note

A key piece of evidence in solving this murder is the ransom note. The police as well as the Ramseys believe that whoever wrote the note is probably the killer. If the police can match the handwriting in the ransom note to a suspect's handwriting, the case is solved. The problem has been they have not found a match. Even without a positive match, the ransom note is still the key to solving this crime.

Using Statement Analysis we can examine this ransom note and determine if it is a legitimate ransom note. Was it the intention of the writer to extort money from the Ramseys, or was the note written as a ploy after JonBenet was killed? Determining the veracity of the ransom note is important. If the note is legitimate, then we know we have a kidnapping that went bad. This would exclude the Ramseys as possible suspects. Why would they kidnap their own child and demand money from themselves? If the note is fraudulent, then we know this was a murder made to look like a kidnapping. Anyone could be a possible suspect. Let's examine the ransom note left at the Ramsey residence. I have added the numbers in the left hand column to make it easier to reference while analyzing it.

Ramsey Suspect's Bay Area TiesTaught In Petaluma School District

41-year-old John Karr and his then-wife, Laura, once lived in Petaluma. She told us they were married back in 1989 and lived in Alabama until the year 2000 when they moved to Petaluma.

snip

In the year 2001, Karr was charged with five counts of possessing child pornography. His teaching credential in Petaluma was suspended, then revoked for violating the education code.

He is still wanted in California. A warrant is still out for his arrest for failure to appear on those charges.

Laura Karr filed for divorce after her husband was charged in 2001. She says her husband did a lot of research on the JonBenet Ramsey case and also on Petaluma's own Polly Klaas.

The suspect, John Mark Karr, lived for a time in the North Bay with his wife and three kids.

41-year-old John Karr and his then-wife, Laura, once lived in Petaluma. She told us they were married back in 1989 and lived in Alabama until the year 2000 when they moved to Petaluma.

Karr taught in the Petaluma School District as a substitute schoolteacher from December of 2000 until April of 2001. The district says they had no complaints about him. Karr also spent time as a teacher in Napa during the same period, working to become a full-fledged credentialed teacher.

In April of 2001, Karr was arrested at a school in Napa on five counts of possessing child pornography. He did serve some time in jail, but was released on his own recognizance in October and later failed to show up in court. He is wanted in Sonoma County and a warrant is still out for his arrest for failure to appear on those charges.

His teaching credential in Petaluma was suspended, then revoked for violating the education code.

Laura Karr filed for divorce after her husband was charged in 2001. When he was allowed out of jail, it was with a lot of limitations and restrictions, including supervised visits with his own children and he was not allowed to be around other children. He was ordered to stay off the computer. Investigators say he was using the computer for child pornography.

His ex-wife also says her husband did a lot of research on the JonBenet Ramsey case and also on Petaluma's own Polly Klaas.

Laura Karr also tells us she's devastated and embarrassed by these murder charges, but she does not believe that her husband did it. She says that during Christmas season of 1996 when JonBenet Ramsey was strangled and beaten to death in Colorado, they were living in Alabama at the time and she was with him the entire Christmas season.

We spoke with a former neighbor of his, Sylvia Ross, who described him as "friendly, but divisive." She says that everyone in the neighborhood knew about the child pornography charges, but were afraid to talk openly about them.

How lucky can a man get? Ask John Ramsey.

First, his wife covers up for him.

Then his wife (and only eyewitness) dies.

And the nutcase (predictably) happens to be a pedophile.

Next John Ramsey will be named "Father of the Year."

Not only wasn't Karr in Colorado on the night of the murder, he has never set foot in the state.

John Ramsey's lawyer has just said that DNA samples have been taken from Karr and are being compared to the foreign DNA found in JoanBenet's undergarments. The results are pending.

If the results are negative (as they will certainly be), what will you say then?

208. Akim, why are you so vehemently defending Mr. Karr?
Even if is lying in his confession, a) it doesn't mean her parents killed her and b) he is still a pedophile! Not really worth defending, if you ask me!!!

212. Karr Is Innocent Except In His Own Warped Mind
I am not defending Karr. He is a vile creature who should rot in jail or an asylum for the rest of his life. But he shouldn't rot there because he killed JoanBenet, because he didn't kill her. He shouldn't rot there in place of John Ramsey, in whom you obviously see virtues that escape me.

219. i have never seen/heard any evidence against John Ramsey
it's not a matter of seeing "virtues" in him.

i say throw the fucking pedophile in a hole for the rest of his life. who cares why he's there? he's scum. we already know THAT much.

217. I don't see any proof on any of the things being said about Karr
as of now it's still all a bunch of bullshit. For all we know this guy is being framed. Do any of you have any idea how EASY it is to frame someone on 5 counts of child pornography? and how impossible it would be to defend oneself?

206. John Ramsey has lost two daughters
his wife died of cancer after 10 years of speculation she killed their daughter with no real evidence. That's lucky?

210. His Wife: The One & Only Eyewitness to His Crime Died. Yeah, He Was Lucky.
"His wife died of cancer after 10 years of speculation she killed their daughter with no real evidence. That's lucky?"

John Ramsey must have been very happy to have everybody speculate that his wife did it. When Patsy died, he lost a faithful companion AND also the one and only eyewitness to his crime. So, yeah, he was lucky.

maybe one day when you are accused of a crime you did not commit you will understand. I don't know if this kook did it, all I know is I've never seen any real evidence the parents were involved.

218. Hitler Was Never Charged With Anything Either.
Guilt does not consist in being charged or even convicted. You are guilty if you committed the crime, regardless of whether you were ever charged or convicted.

221. "Not Being Charged With a Crime" Is Not the Same Thing as Innocence
Hitler was never charged with any crime, but do you think that makes him innocent? Apply the same rule to John Ramsey.

Incidentally, the game is up: Karr has been exposed as a fraud.

John Ramsey is again the only living adult in the house when JonBenet was killed.

188. Curious is that this is 10 years later... Statute of limitations?
Edited on Thu Aug-17-06 10:49 AM by calipendence
Now there is no statute of limitations for murder, which is why this guy is still able to be arrested now.

But it does seem weird that this is 10 years after the original crime. Makes me wonder if there's some sort of statute of limitations of 10 years for other crimes that might have been committed (perhaps by the Ramsey's in perhaps allowing this guy to "access" her or something like that?). That way if that fact comes out, they still don't get nailed for that other crime and will say "we've been punished enough" for being suspected of the murder all of these years, etc.

It just seems weird that 10 years later they conveniently arrest this guy now without explanation of why such a lead of finding him wasn't pursued earlier and him arrested earlier.
