Jill Carroll Writes About Abduction; Says She Pleaded to Die by Pistol...
BOSTON (AP) -- At one of the most desperate moments of her captivity in Iraq, fearing she was about to be beheaded, reporter Jill Carroll pleaded with one of her captors for a quick death by pistol, saying: "I don't want the knife."

In her first public account of her 82-day hostage ordeal, Carroll said she had feared the worst when her captors said they planned to use her in a second propaganda video. The kidnappers, however, seemed confused when she made her request and said they didn't plan to kill her.

1. Best one
was the Italian who said, "Now, I will show you how an Italian dies!" and went out fighting. Forget the name, but it was beautiful to see.

2. Beautiful???
I haven't watched any of those videos, but I don't see how you can apply the word beautiful to such a thing. Nothing beautiful about the slaughter of a person for a made for video event.

5. I Think He Was Talking About How U.S. Troops
ambushed a car that was carrying that Italian journalist and killed her bodyguard who said that phrase.

6. Where did you come up with that bit of fiction?

It has nothing to do with Giuliana Sgrena's convoy or Nicola Calipari death what so ever.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fabrizio_Quattrocchi

Fabrizio Quattrocchi (c. 1968 – April 14, 2004) was an Italian security guard taken hostage by Islamist militants in Iraq, notable for his apparent defiance of captors shortly before being killed.

He was taken hostage together with Umberto Cupertino, Maurizio Agliana and Salvatore Stefio. They worked in Iraq as security contractors.

Quattrocchi's kidnappers forced him to dig his own grave and kneel beside it wearing a hood as they prepared to film his death, but he defied them by pulling off the hood and shouting "Adesso (or ora) vi faccio vedere come muore un italiano." -- "Now I will show you how an Italian dies." He was then shot in the back of the neck.

8. Best Kidnapping? Murder? What?
I wasn't aware that there was such a thing as a "best" in this situation.

Sad :(

13. I'm willing to bet the only reason she's not dead is because she's a woman
The damage executing a woman would have done to that group's PR was likely the only thing that kept her alive.

14. I don't dispute that; however, that wasn't my point.
The other poster offered up the ridiculous idea that she should've fought to the death rather than try to survive captivity. The "it's better to die on your feet than live on your knees" nonsense was bullshit when Hemingway wrote it, and it's still bullshit. She should in no way be faulted for surviving.
