ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) -- U.S. Sen. Mel Martinez acknowledged today that the Federal Election Commission is auditing his 2004 campaign financial records.
The Orlando Republican said in a statement issued by his campaign that he is cooperating with the F-E-C and blamed apparent accounting errors on the unexpected success his campaign had in raising and spending more than twelve (m) million dollars in a 10-month span.
A campaign lawyer said it was an accounting issue, not an investigation.
Martinez' public F-E-C file contains several letters from the agency questioning changes in the amount of debt listed in periodic filings. His lawyer acknowledged that was among the problems that emerged after the 2004 election.
Martinez defeated Democrat Betty Castor, a former state education commissioner.
