Senator: Bob Ney Won't Seek Re-Election
Senator: Bob Ney Won't Seek Re-Election
By JOE DANBORN , 08.07.2006, 03:17 AM

U.S. Rep. Bob Ney, dogged by an influence peddling probe in Washington, will not seek re-election, state Sen. Joy Padgett said early Monday.

Ney called Padgett on Saturday and asked the fellow Republican to run in his place, saying that defending himself has been a strain on his family, she said.

"It's a very sad time," Padgett said of Ney's decision, first reported by the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review on its Web site.

She said Ney told her, "that there's only so much he can take. He said, 'I have to do this.'"

1. Does that mean the Dems will pick up his seat?
Or will the Rethugs have someone else run in his place?

2. Probally
Could be easier for Zack Space to pick the seat since he dosen't have to run againist the longtime incumbent. Could be a bad thing cause the repuke they choose to run will obiously have no ties to Jack Abramoff.

10. It will be a toss up
The 18th is heavily gerrymandered in favor of republicans. Padgett defeated Terry Anderson (former journalist who was held hostage in Lebanon). On the plus side, Zack's team has been up and running and raising money since the primary.

Wikipedia has this on Padgett:

In her 2004 bid for a second term, Padgett was challenged by Democratic nominee Terry Anderson of Athens, Ohio, who in the 1980s had been held hostage by Islamic radicals in Lebanon. Anderson's challenge made the race the only seriously contested Ohio Senate race in the 2004 election. After waging a tough and divisive campaign against her opponent, Padgett won re-election with 54 percent of the vote.
During her race against Terry Anderson, Padgett accused Anderson of being a member of the "Blame America crowd", and campaign fliers showed a photograph of Anderson in a meeting with a leader of Hezbollah. In response, Anderson said, "He and his brothers were the ones who kidnapped me, chained me, blindfolded me and beat me. My political opponent uses a picture of that interview to try to win an election." <1>
Early in 2005, Padgett joined Ohio Attorney General Jim Petro's campaign for Governor as a Regional Chair and worked on his behalf as he and Lt. Governor candidate Phil Heimlich campaigned. Following Heimlich's decision to leave the ticket in order to run for re-election as a Hamilton County Commissioner, Petro named Padgett his running mate as candidate for Lt. Governor.
The primary election was held on May 2nd, 2006. Ohio Secretary of State Ken Blackwell, and State Representative Tom Raga were victorious over the Petro/Padgett team.

16. The GOP in Ohio is a crime syndicate
Every GOP candidate or officeholder is connected to illegal activity in one way or another because the GOP funds all of these races to keep control of Ohio government. As a state senator, Joy Padgett has had every campaign she has run paid for by the GOP crime syndicate. It won't be hard to follow the money.

33. Great news for Space!
Though, I must say, I know one of his campaign managers, and off the record, he says that Space is a complete moron and will lose in 2008. Basically, this is an UBER UBER republican district and it takes Ney's MEGA corruption problems to make this even a close race. So be prepared to have this seat as a one time thing.

46. Padgett's money is Ney's money.
Behind in the polls in her 2004 senate race, Padgett got a cash infusion from Bob Ney which allowed her to buy a massive radio campaign about her opponent forcing everyone to have a gay marriage.

At least $7,500 from Ney's congressional campaign fund and his PAC to Padgett are obvious without digging too deep.

The rest of the Abramoff and Noe money is there, it's just buried deeper.

Edited on Mon Aug-07-06 07:23 AM by OzarkDem
None of these lackeys do anything w/o being told by GOP leaders and in Ohio w/o consent from Voinovich.

Here's a link to Padgett's page in the Ohio Senate. What a despicable person, to campaign the way she did against Terry Anderson.

On edit: I'm sending Zack Space a contribution, I hope he strips the bark off this broad.

Don't worry, they will have someone to run for that seat. The problem is finding someone in Ohio that hasn't been involved in our " pay to play politics.
Is she a coin collector or on of the vote counters. Has to be connected, if your a Republican in Ohio you have to be shady.
We don't have much time but we'll find something.

I was walking around the House buildings last month, and passed Ney's office. All the reps have these books outside their offices where constituents, etc, can sign, like a visitor's book.

I so wanted to write "Enjoy Jail" in his book.

The story of Ney encompasses the main themes of the story of our dessimation as a society.

He was there for most of it, knows the key players, came up with some of the key strategies.

He won't talk and he may never be indicted but he has certainly become terribly inconvenient.
He's not going gently. I'd bet he got a strong shove. That would ben an interesting story.

39. "Only so much he can take"
What an amateur. The successful Republicans can take with both hands. Look at Cheney. He's been taking since day one. There is no limit as to how much a Republican can take.

Speaking of taking, what's he going to do with the money his supporters paid to him to run this race?

42. Bad news for "Democrats"???
I just read the story on the ABC News website. They say this could mean (quote) "bad news for Democrats" as it robs them of a poster-boy for Republican misconduct in the November mid-terms.

Either the voters are morons or they are.

But then again, I'm keeping a close watch on the Busby/Bilbray recount efforts in San Diego. That should of been a sure-fire Dem win after their Rep "Duke" Cunningham went to prison... talk about your "Culture of Corruption" poster boys! Yet, the race was razor-thin close (if not outright stolen), so maybe they have a point in suggesting that the resignation of yet another disgraced Republican cheats us out of a whipping boy. I don't agree, but who knows?

The Lieberman/Lamont race gives me hope though. As Joe has just about every "official" endorsement, fellow politicians (including Clinton himself) and all five major newspapers, the fact that Lamont is polling with such a huge lead and voters aren't just supporting who "the names" say they should support, gives me hope.
