Missouri execution doctor has troubled past: paper
Missouri execution doctor has troubled past: paper
23 minutes ago

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (Reuters) - A doctor who oversaw dozens of Missouri executions until his questionable practices led a judge to suspend executions in the state, has been sued for malpractice more than 20 times and has a history of making medical mistakes, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported on Sunday.

Alan R. Doerhoff, 62, also has been banned from at least two Missouri hospitals and was publicly reprimanded by the state's Board of Healing Arts in 2003 because Doerhoff was trying to conceal malpractice claims from hospitals where he was working, the newspaper reported.

The state Attorney General's Office was aware of the reprimand, but the state Department of Corrections continued to employ Doerhoff to handle lethal injections, the Post-Dispatch reported.

Indeed, the state tried to keep his identity a secret in an appeal earlier this year by inmate Michael A. Taylor, who claimed the heart-stopping drug given in lethal injections can cause excruciating pain if the inmate is not given proper levels of anesthesia first.

1. Shades of the Nazi death camp "experiments," I'm afraid. Imagine trying
to figure out the best ways to kill people. What causes most pain? What causes least pain? What is slowest? What is quickest? And the man or woman (Bush executed a woman--gleefully executed her; mockingly--despite the pleas of many religious leaders) who lay on the table, strapped down, is more often than not a poor black, whose defense lawyer was asleep half the time during trial, and who may or may not be guilty of anything, justice in our "justice system" having become so corrupt and uneven.

What have we become? Bush in our souls, giggling at our power to inflict pain and death.

I read a CA Supreme Court opinion that ordered the death a young man--a boy at the time of his crime--that sent chills through my soul, so obvious was the thrill that the Justices received from denying this youngster's appeal and ridiculing his lawyer. He was a ghetto youth caught in a territorial gang war. He was, in a sense, born in prison--that is, in a poverty-stricken, rudderless, forgotten community--and knew only violent means of survival in the continual gang warfare.

I think these CA Justices are sick in the head. Sick with power. And they are consciously sending the message that "might makes right" throughout our society. It is THEIR sickness, and THEIR lack of social and political leadership, that fosters many of the perpetrator-VICTIMS that they thrill to execute.

Think of the many wise and progressive (belief in humanity) measures that could have been taken to give this young man a chance at recompense, at a good life, at healing the wounds in himself and his community. All that money--on unjust "justice," on cops, on prisons, on executioners and METHODS of execution--and none for his rehabilitation.

Think about HIM--and then think about Bush, who is treated with respect, and garnished with billions of dollars, while he slaughters tens of thousands of innocent people, and tortures many others.

And we have no resources to rescue a ghetto youth gone bad? And we don't even bother? And the supposedly best among us--judges, supposedly wise and objective--can hardly contain their laughs as they ridicule his lawyers' arguments for his life?

I don't often raise the matter of "What have we become?"--because I think so much of our self-image is being deliberately brain-washed into us. We are not killers. We are not torturers. We are not haters. We are, in fact, a very progressive and generous and tolerant people, in most respects--with liberal views that have been unshaken by 24/7 fascist propaganda. Hundreds of opinion polls, corporate and independent, on many issues, over a long period of time, show this overwhelmingly. But the one exception is capital punishment, which our people unreasonably cling to, and fail to see as the fascist control mechanism that it is.

On this matter, we are barbarians. And, while we did not elect this heinous, psychotic, barbarian president and his evil cabal--and while many are working on removing the mechanism by which the cabal achieved and retained power (stolen elections; most recently, by electronic means)--Bush & co. do reflect the American psyche to this extent: the hypocritical, completely unchristian, cold-blooded, state murder of imprisoned people.

It poisons us all. It poisons our society. And it's no surprise to me that a doctor who would agree to participate in this barbarity is corrupt through and through.
