US Blocks UN Council From Condemning Israel Strike On Post
UNITED NATIONS (AP)--The U.S. blocked the U.N. Security Council from issuing a statement that would have condemned Israel's bombing of a U.N. post on the Lebanon border that killed four military observers.

U.S. diplomats refused to comment and U.S. Ambassador John Bolton was in Washington preparing for a new confirmation hearing before the Senate. But several diplomats said the U.S. objected to one paragraph, which said the council "condemns any deliberate attack against U.N. personnel and emphasizes that such attacks are unacceptable."

Earlier Wednesday, Bolton had said that the thrust of a council statement should be to express regret, send condolences and support an investigation to find out exactly what happened - not "to make it a back door to get into other political and military questions."

After several hours of negotiations that ran late into the evening, the council gave up on a statement addressing the Tuesday bombing of the U.N. post and agreed to come back tomorrow.

20. Power of the purse
continues to work its magic. The US pays too much of the operating budget for that to happen. Besides, if we got out/were forced out the repukes and talk radio ninnies would stay buzzed for weeks. Not sure I could stand that.

Seriously, in its current structure the UN could not function without active USA participation. That is why the US is able to hold the rest of the organization hostage in so many areas to force its will.

26. Morning k&r. If the US left the UN
Edited on Thu Jul-27-06 05:46 AM by Ghost Dog
then we would so clearly see that the rest of the world confronts or opposes or disagrees with the USA, except for the Poodle and Israel, on so many vital issues; and many useful "world governance" initiatives could perhaps move forward.

But, even from outside the UN, the US would still believe it could continue to veto attempts to achieve effective world harmony through (greedy) economic might (maybe not for much longer) and the frequently frankly immoral use of military force. Hence, perhaps, the current Straussian strategies have been selected so as to maintain and reinforce the hegemony of the few.

(edit for clarity).

24. Anyone Bush appoints will *vote* exactly like Bolton is.
Edited on Thu Jul-27-06 02:08 AM by w4rma
Except their presence might not bring as much opposition to Bush's views as Bolton's uncharismatic methods do.

4. Its official: we are deep in this one too.
As if there was any doubt. The neocons are getting their war on and we are busy fighting amongst ourselves. How grand our opposition to their vile plans are. How astutely we analyze their every move.

16. OH! DOES THAT BOMB HAVE "U.S.A." MARKINGS!!!!!
I am so sick of this,...

They fucking bombed the UN, just like the U.S.

The only reason: they want to rule the world and want to destroy that which seeks to UNITE the world in a democratic, CIVIL manner.

I have lost my hearing for those advocating either the U.S. or Israel. I am an advocate for their people but completely OPPOSE those governing and waging death and destruction and CONTROL.

Prolly why I am losing my job under a REpuke,...too independent.

Talk about arrogance. Things like this make it difficult to convince Muslims around the world that the 'American-Zionist alliance against Arabs' is a myth.

22. And that all they want is their "well-being" so they should welcome
them with flowers! (no-less!)

Note: I have nothing against the people in Israel (nor in the US, the UK, nor in Australia) who just loathe the neocons's wars for greed at the expense of their taxpayers and their troopers's lives. I loathe these criminals as much as they do.

There are other ways to negociate for peace (peacefully).

Do they have Diebold&Co-like machines in Israel??

Anybody knows?

19. I still can't believe that one, an AMERICAN CITY.
I guess we should just start believing it, but fuck does that mean we have to accept it?

And Brad Pitt is shocked, I tell you, SHOCKED, on his recent 'visit' to NOLA! Oh man...why...

"The first rule of New Orleans is that there is no New Olreans..."

If it wasn't for NOLA, we would have lost the war of 1812! Fer Keerists sakes people! argh...
