Poll: Most disapprove of Bush's stem cell veto

WASHINGTON - A majority of Americans disapproved of President Bush's veto of a bill that would have expanded federal funding for embryonic stem cell research, but many don't believe he did so for political gain, a USA TODAY/Gallup Poll shows.

The Friday-Sunday poll found that 58 percent disapproved of the veto, which Bush issued last week, while 36 percent approved. The House failed to override the veto - the first in Bush's 5 1/2 years as president - only hours after the measure was returned to Congress without his signature.

...

In the poll, 61 percent said Bush rejected the bill for personal moral beliefs; 32 percent said he did it to gain political advantage. "If this bill were to become law, American taxpayers for the first time in our history would be compelled to fund the deliberate destruction of human embryos," Bush said in his veto message. "Crossing this line would be a grave mistake."

Among those expressing disapproval, 44 percent said they were "very" or "somewhat" upset by the veto; 14 percent, not at all.

9. I Hope the Fuckers who support him
Get some kind of disease that wastes away their body

And they die a long death in excruciating pain, being denied the pain killers they have outlawed

12. That would be justice
I support your idea. Let them suffer what they condemn others to suffer, and maybe they would become more compassionate. They are scum, all of them. Let them have a taste of what they condemn others to swallow.

4. What a hypocrite
"If this bill were to become law, American taxpayers for the first time in our history would be compelled to fund the deliberate destruction of human embryos"

BUT if you're a private corp go for it. You can make LOTS of MONEY! It's GREAT!!!

5. Interesting, but not surprising
The numbers match up exactly with his overall approval numbers. It tends to prove the notion that the remaining 36% or whatever the number is, is mainly those who are waiting for "the rapture."

6. To those that aren't in favor of stem cell research
Have you ever been inside a stem cell lab? Have you even seen a picture of a stem cell? Gawd I miss the days when you needed a license to practice medicine in this country.

This is the most bizarre of all the culture war issues.

10. Will there be protests?
Will the Fundies be able to get a dozen people together to protest when these precious embryos go into the incinerator along with the rest of the medical 'waste'.

11. I don't know if I agree with the idea of the Dems trying to use this
in their campaigns. There are a heck of a lot of other, more important issues to raise. Yeah, it was political but alot of people would say so what - what isn't? I don't think you'll convince those who think it was a pro-life or moral beliefs based vote otherwise.

snip>

Sen. Charles Schumer of New York, head of the Democratic Senate Campaign Committee, and others in his party said they will make the veto a political issue in the fall congressional campaigns. Ads are running in Wisconsin and are planned in Missouri, Pennsylvania and other states against Republicans who voted no on the bill.

snip>

Democratic critics charged that Bush rejected the bill to appeal to conservative voters who are a key element in the Republican base.

"This wasn't a pro-life veto. This was a political veto," said Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass.

15. That is really quite sad
I suppose those who agreed with the veto thought he did it out of moral beliefs that was 36% which happens to be just about where his approval number are. No surprise there.

I also suppose that the 32% who said he did it for political advantage came out of the 58% who disapproved. As for the rest, well, either they couldn't see how Bush could gain a political advantage from this or they are truly deluded when it comes to this president.

Unfortunately some people still want to believe, against all evidence, in their leader.

17. *wonders if there will be a 'deceased stem cell tour'*
...like there was with that preserved Fetus On Parade.
I'm sorry, but the picture of that woman all worked up and sobbing over a long-dead, non-viable, preserved piece of flesh while LIVING children are being blown to bits just really pissed me off. :grr:
