Murtha renews call for Iraq pullout deadline

HAMPTON, N.H. -- Pennsylvania Congressman John Murtha said Sunday he doesn't mind being the focal point of controversy over America's involvement in Iraq as he calls for the prompt withdrawal of U.S. soldiers there.

"I'm doing this for the troops because I think they've done everything they can and I'm doing this for the future of the military," he said.

Varied opinions among local Democrats about how best to get out of Iraq didn't stop them from giving the decorated veteran of Korea and Vietnam a standing ovation after he spoke.

"It's a civil war and our troops are caught in between," he said.

...

"They have to settle their own civil war," he said of the Iraqis. "This can only be done diplomatically. There are some wars that can't be won militarily."

1. "The future of the military"
What a cosmic idea. No doubt all the riff raff on the right are all fired up and concerned about the future of our military. Their future in Iran, Lebanon, North Korea. But I think the Colonel was thinking of something entirely different, something right wing riff raff could not possibly comprehend. You Go Colonel.

3. It pisses me off that Rep. Murtha has to stand out there all by himself
without a huge group of Dem Reps around him with his ass hanging in the breeze. Why the hell does he have to take all of the flack on his own? God bless you Rep. Murtha.

4. Marines Lead from the Front
Edited on Mon Jul-24-06 01:30 PM by BOSSHOG
I have no doubt that COLONEL Murtha is very comfortable in his position. He loves his Marines and as a great leader he would not subject them to undue hardship.

I remember when I was a junior Sailor (a long, long time ago), there was a long line in the galley (eating facility) and a Marine Colonel was waiting for the line to go down, I was near the end of the line and being a good suck up, I asked the Colonel why he did not go ahead. He said, I don't eat until my Marines and Sailors eat.

5. I get that, but on the flipside..would his Marines stand aside while their
Colonel was taking heavy fire, or would they pick up their weapons and start covering his back?

You just made me think of my favorite joke from my Army days, occasionally stationed near Marines at a Naval Air Station...

Q: What do Marines call a helicopter?

A: Uhhh Uhhhh Uhhhh Uhhh

6. Obviously his fellow congressman
were(are) not Marines.

I worked for a Chopper Pilot (Navy). He was insane, but cool guy to work for. I think he loved cheating death everytime he went on ops.
