Russia May Send Navy Ships to Lebanon — Source
From ITAR-TASS via MosNews.com:

Russia may send navy ships to the Lebanon coast, the ITAR-TASS news agency reported on Monday quoting a source in the Defense Ministry. The move is being considered as Russia prepares to evacuate its citizens from the conflict zone.

On Sunday Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that Russia is preparing to evacuate its citizens from Lebanon

Lavrov warned that the fighting between Israel and Lebanese guerrillas could ignite a wider conflict, and said the international community had to use all means possible to end the violence immediately.

“If Lebanon explodes, we all know ... how it can resonate across other countries in the region,” Lavrov told reporters at the G8 meeting in St. Petersburg.

3. Indeed. I couldn't help a bit of gallows humor when I read...
“If Lebanon explodes, we all know ..." and finished it with my "that it would only be fair for Russia to have some representation present to catch fire, be sunk or shot down."

(Eze.38-39) Gog is the ancient name for the land of Russian. In the
last days, Russia will make a move against Israel and be defeated by
a supernatural act of God.

(so say the fundies)

On edit: corrected title

6. I wonder if they'll be waving
and sending vodka over to the US war ships?
They are there to protect their interests with Iran and to keep the US in check. They do not approve of UN security council sanctions against Iran and appear smart enough now to know that the US cannot be trusted to go unchecked in it's attempt to ignite a war with Iran.
Perhaps their presence will also let Israel know it cannot get away with facilitating such an action either and that America and Israel cannot run roughshod over the region bringing regime change to any country they deem necessary.

7. Depends
I doubt that the Russians really have enough naval forces to be much of a threat, if we would choose to intervene.

9. In "Patriot Games," Fred Thompson's character, an admiral, says
something like, "When you have all these ships running around out there, something's going to happen."

It wouldn't take much to make something happen.

I hope that the French, Italians and Greeks get their ships between the U.S. and Russian ships. Keep them separated and make them think twice.
