Senate poised to pass, Bush likely to veto, stem-cell bill
President George W. Bushis likely to wield his veto pen for the first time this week, if, as expected, Congress passes legislation expanding federal funding for embryonic stem-cell research.

The Senate was due on Monday and Tuesday to debate three separate stem-cell bills, but the main one, the controversial Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act, would lift rules set by Bush in 2001 limiting federal money to research on existing stem-cell lines.

(snip)
"This is a bill that every family in America ... is one phone call or one diagnosis away from needing," said House of Representatives Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi at a news conference last week.

Scientists say they need the bill so they can access stem cells from donated frozen embryos left over after fertility treatments.

1. Let that small-minded idiot make this issue his first veto.
History, record that, because it's downright disgusting to me.

I was overseas last week; heard about stem-cell research helping to create 'sperm' for those that can't, but don't know if that info made it over here. How will the 'righteous' feel about that?

10. The little piglet only cares about "life" before it is viable or born.
After it is born, he could care less if it has health care, a decent job, and civil rights.

2. Brownback is vigorously opposing this bill.

But most conservatives oppose any use of stem cells and say they are heartened by the president's resolute stance against the bill.

Conservative Senator Sam Brownback said it was virtually beyond the realm of possibility that Bush would sign the bill into law.

"I can't imagine that scenario," he told reporters last week.

"This is a man who has stated very clearly he's going to veto the bill."

He said there is little room for ambiguity on the issue, and offer three reasons for opposing the research: "It's illegal, it's immoral and it's unnecessary."

Brownback insisted that science has moved beyond the limitations earlier seen in adult stem-cell use.

7. No. It's the House that sinks it.
The Senate could muster 67 votes, but there's no way in the House. The bill passed 238 to 194. Well short of the 288 line.

12. Too bad the Senate can't do what Bush did with Bolton...
...just wait till Bush goes on vacation and then pass it.
IIRC, Bush waited till the Senate was in recess to slip John Bolton in the back door for the Embarrassment Ambassador to the U.N. postion...

4. He welcomes all the appropriations bills
for his 'war' that kills thousands but uses the veto pen, for the first time ever, to not save thousands, or more.

Can we impeach him NOW? Please.

5. his only veto will be to restrict life saving research
it is mind boggling that 30-some-odd percent of people aren't yet ashamed they voted for him

6. I still think he'll crap out and sign it
Edited on Sun Jul-16-06 11:50 PM by bluestateguy
when has this president ever backed up one of his veto threats with an actual veto? How many bills has he vetoed?

No member of Congress should pay any attention to Baby Bush's empty threats. They never mean anything.

He'll sign the bill very quietly and without fanfare.

9. Doesn't the Senate alone override the veto? I didn't know the
House was involved. This should become a rallying cry for the Dems. Most people want this research. It is cruel and unthinking to refuse it. Bush had better hope that he never needs it.
