AP: Ex-Houston Mayor Collapses at Lay Funeral
Ex-Houston Mayor Collapses at Lay Funeral

Wednesday July 12, 2006 5:16 PM

HOUSTON (AP) - Former Houston Mayor Bob Lanier collapsed Wednesday as he arrived
at the funeral of Enron Corp. founder Ken Lay. "He is very, very ill," said Pastor
Steve Wende of First United Methodist Church, just before Lay's funeral began.

Lanier, 80, served six years as Houston mayor in the 1990s.

He was brought out of the church on a gurney, administered oxygen and was taken away
by ambulance. His wife, Elyse, was with him.

Lanier testified as a character witness at Lay's fraud and conspiracy trial.

Lanier, a developer, heads the Lanier Public Policy Conference at the University of Houston.

2. Never Die
I sometimes believe these people are so caught up in themselves that death and dieing never become a reality to them, they think they are so rich that God will let them out of dieing

11. There was no body at the Memorial Service.
Ken Lay was cremated in Colorado. His ashes were buried there.

4. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.

I was living in Houston during his tenure as mayor and my ex's family did a LOT of business (development) with the old bastard. He was a jovial guy, but ruthless.

Lanier and Lay were peas in a pod.

By the way, Elyse is the definition of 'haughty bitch'.

5. Lanier may not be perfect, but he isnt evil either
He was a very popular mayor and a strong supporter of Bill Clinton. When he left the mayor's office (due to term limits), his support for Lee Brown helped elect Houston's first African-American mayor. (And just to show how convoluted Texas politics can be, consider the fact that in 2001, Brown was endorsed for re-election by Bill Clinton and Ken Lay, while Brown's opponent was supported by George Bush).

6. Whatever Lay had, it must be contagious
Guilty conscience, fear of Bushco...it's like another sequel of The Godfather lately.

9. Or maybe he's just an 80 year old guy with a history of heart problems
the guy had a heart attack eight years ago (when he was 73) and underwent a quadruple bypass operation.
