Chechen rebel leader Basayev killed: Tass
MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia's most wanted man, Chechen rebel leader Shamil Basayev, has been killed, the country's state security chief has told President Vladimir Putin, Itar-Tass news agency said on Monday.

Basayev, who claimed responsibility for the 2004 Beslan school attack in which more than 330 died, half of them children, and a string of other attacks, was killed together with other Chechen fighters, Nikolai Patrushev told Putin.

1. Al-Zarqawi, redux. They used to swap spies. Now it's terrorists.
Trading pieces is part of the Great Game. The Board is beginning to look a little bare. Time to castle and move that Queen out.

2. Beslan terrorist leader killed, reports say
Staff and agencies

Guardian Unlimited

The Chechen rebel leader responsible for the Beslan school massacre and the Moscow theatre siege has been killed, Russian media reported today.

The Itar-Tass news agency reported that Shamil Basayev, who led the most violent wing of the Chechen separatist movement, had been killed overnight in the Russian republic of Ingushetia, west of Chechnya.

The Russian president, Vladimir Putin, was quoted as saying that Basayev's killing was "deserved retribution" for the terrorist attacks carried out by his groups.

3. If they really got Basayev, it's a big deal.
It is worth remembering that he has been "killed" a number of times before.

4. I thought it was a big deal, since The Guardian sent it into the middle of
what I was typing, they thought it was that important, and they're usually reliable. I remember when the Beslan story hit, taking over the newscasts. This was among the most heartbreaking stories I've ever heard, so thought this was worth posting. I never thought I would be glad to hear that someone was dead, but this guy deserves it, if anyone does...:-(

But I guess it's like the reported death of the "second-in-command" of al-Quaeda, we will never know for sure. But that's the media. We only can know what they tell us is true, and don't believe most of it...:eyes:

Patrushev gave no details of Basayev's death in his televised remarks,
but an Ingush regional Interior Ministry official, speaking on condition
of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media, said
he had been killed while accompanying a truck filled with 220 pounds
of dynamite that blew up in the Ingush village of Ekazhevo early Monday.

Basayev was among four militants killed in the blast.

The Kavkaz-Center Web site, which is considered a voice for Basayev,
confirmed that he died "as a martyr." Citing a member of the rebel
parliament, Abu Umar, it said Basayev had died in an accidental explosion
of a truck Monday.

"There was no special operation. Shamil and other brothers of ours became
martyrs by the will of Allah," he said. The site confirmed three other rebels
had been killed in the blast.

6. He is an interesting story this guy
he was on the barricades with Yeltsin when there was that coup against Gorbachov in 1991.

Then later there was the Budyonnovsk hospital hostage crisis, which is another great example of how able the Russian forces are at getting hostages killed.
