House condemns intelligence leaks

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday condemned public disclosure of secret surveillance programs as Republicans stepped up their criticism of news media that published details of a bank-monitoring program last week.

By a largely party-line vote of 227 to 183, the House passed a nonbinding resolution condemning the disclosure of classified information and declaring that the House "expects the cooperation of all news media … by not disclosing classified intelligence programs."

Lawmakers said a secret Treasury Department program that monitors bank transactions with the aim of tracking down terror groups had been compromised by news reports in the New York Times and other newspapers.

...

Democrats prepared a similar resolution but the Republican majority did not allow it to come up for a vote. Republicans should not blame newspapers for holding the Bush administration accountable when they themselves had failed to do so, Democrats said.

11. well, to be fair

The New York Times is owned by a corporation, it doesn't really constitute 'the independent press'. Frankly, I haven't seen very much of the independent press these days....I think something like DU might count, but DU doesn't publish articles anymore, only DU Journals.

4. Another waste of time & money. This banking thing has been known about
since shortly after 9-11 I believe, not sure why the NYT's is reporting it as though it's "new". Heck Bush brought it up if I remember correctly and anyone who has done any banking over a couple of thousand dollars or has sold a house knows about it if they pay attention at all.

The Dems need to stop falling in line when pure BS is spewed, call BS what it is and fight it with FACTS and info.

14. everyone Looking at the jackass list...
Shouldn't be surprised at this list, Just take a good look at it. With the exception of DeFazio the Democrats that voted for it are either DLC or blue dog Democrats, you know they side with republicans. Like Gene Taylor or Charlie Melancon for example.

Don't be surprised, the real progressive democrats didn't vote for it and that's just fine with me.

6. By condemning the NYT - they condemn the Constitution and the Bill of Rights
This is not about bu$h and his secret little government and him being above the law as they want everyone to believe.

This is a black stain on the freedoms we were guaranteed by the Constitution.

7. Well, so much for a free press
I condemn the House Rep. who supported this measure and others like it for violating our rights. As long as our government and their supporters in Congress see fit to conduct any type of secret surveillance program that gives them access to my private information without my permission, I adamantly feel I have a right to know what they are doing and how they are doing it.

"Lawmakers said a secret Treasury Department program that monitors bank transactions with the aim of tracking down terror groups had been compromised by news reports in the New York Times and other newspapers." Did I hear the word "secret" again? Just throw the word "terrorists" into anything today and they can do whatever they want apparently.

21. House condemns Intelligence leaks
This issue is mostly leaving out the context, which
should NEVER be left out, of any situation.
The issue is framed by most people as one of
"terrorism" or "we need security", never
within the proper context that sentient, thinking people need
to consider.
The United States' ruling class is, like others before
it, out for domination and hegemony. The Project For A New
American Century (PNAC) documents written by the Neocons
several years ago provides the "context" by
demonstrating the objectives of Middle East hegemony BEFORE
9-11. They even said they needed a new "Pearl
Harbor" to set their plans for conquest in motion. And
what better way to get that "Pearl Harbor" incident
but to continue encroaching upon the Middle East (and the
world).
The United States has to my knowledge several hundred
military bases around the world, including the ones they are
building in Iraq. The purpose of these bases, as openly
stated by people like Thomas P.M. Barnett, who is a Naval
strategy planner, is to economically dominate and impose upon
the world the "American Way" of doing things,
particularly economically, and in the American elites
financial interest.
So it must be said that the attempt has been made by the
corporate media, (corporate fat cats being the prime
beneficiaries of our[their] hegemony), to completely take out
of the discussion the context and provocation they've
undertaken, as well as the ongoing attempts to dominate and
tyrannize this country itself, all in the name of
"protecting" us.
The hegemony in the Middle East centers, according to
former CIA analyst Bill Christison, primarily American support
for Israel, support for pro-American tyrannies like the
Saudis, and so forth.
To be a citizen of these countries, particularly
Palestinian, is to endure misery and injustice day after day,
which only breeds terrorism as a response. If the Middle East
were unified, and had military bases ringing The Unites
States, let alone all the other political arrangements based
on that military superiority, what would be the response of
Americans? Undoubtedly many would become
"terrorists", just like say, the American
revolutionaries at Lexington and Concord who rebelled against
hegemony.
It's never discussed in popular circles the injustice of
the Israeli occupation, with regard to historical context.
People like Norman Finkelstein and Ralph Shoenmann have
demonstrated the historical presence of the Palestinians in
what is now Israel, and that they were the majority
population, only to be evicted.
This fact is central and critical to understanding the
present situation. In fact, many "obscure" but no
doubt right on the mark analyses of the situation show a close
resemblance between Israeli ambitions and those of the United
States. American subjugation and desruction of indigenous
popualations is seen as a "model" for the Israeli's
hegemony.
The comparison is apt, except that America was a huge,
underpopulated region, wheras, the Middle East is not. It
shows the cruelty of the "dirty whites" who ruled
America that they could have peacefully co-existed on the
large landmass with the Indians, but chose domination and
subjugation.
The Israeli subjugation, has little long term hope for
the Palestinians and others enduring misery. There is no
space for "reservations" that would offer at least
temporary sanctuary for oppressed peoples. This breeds
desperation, and no doubt, "terrorism".
As for keeping track of financial records and other
"data" by the government or others, this is
ultimately an attempt to indentify and persecute domestic
opposition to the right-wing authority. The
"terrorists" were already well aware of financial
record tracking, but you should realize it will probably be
used for domestic "profiling" to punish those who
are trying to do progressive things with their money. So it
is wise to consider being careful with your personal
information, and consider that the internet is monitored as
well.
