Lesbian foster parents win Missouri case

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The state plans to drop its legal challenge to a lesbian's efforts to become a foster parent because a new state law makes the appeal impossible, Missouri Attorney General Jay Nixon said.

A spokesman for Gov. Matt Blunt called the decision "outrageous" and said the governor wants the appeal to continue.

Both men are running for governor in 2008, and exchanges between Nixon, a Democrat, and Blunt, a Republican, have become increasingly pointed in recent months.

Nixon said the law, which Blunt signed this week, deletes a long-standing state law that banned same-sex sexual contact and that had been the basis of the state's appeal.

1. Does this Matt Blunt character have kids?
I wonder how he'd feel if somebody wanted to take them away.

4. He's got a son
under 2 years old.

What's really screwy about this, is this couple seems to be extrememly well qualified to be foster parents. The partner that filed the suit has a bachelor’s degree in human development and family with special emphasis on child development.

8. I experienced this a LOT growing up
Gay people seem to have to give twice the effort to get half the credit. I'm getting pretty fucking tired of having to be better then everyone around me in almost everything to be treated like I'm just as good as they are.

!!!

And to put snow on the mountain, even then I've gotten completely ripped apart afterward.

It's ridiculous. Completely, utterly ridiculous, and a lot of very good people are being overlooked, ridiculed, scorned, legislated against, ostracized, beaten, and even killed because of the mindset behind it.

Question: how many times must a dog be kicked before it becomes generally, reasonably acceptable for the dog to bite the kicker?

6. Sickening.
Here you have someone stepping up to the plate, with willingness to become a foster parent. It's not easy to do. And there are never enough to fill the need. So many foster parents have the ability to change the direction of a young life or actually save that life.
And these assholes make someone's sexual orientation an issue. It's disgusting and wrong in so many ways, I can't even begin.

9. This is how we do it in Michigan
This policy has remained in force for a long time, through liberal and conservative governors, and the same applies to adoption.

Only married couples can get a license together to be foster parents. A single gay person can get a fc license, and if she has a partner, the partner can't be licensed, but can live in the home. The partner must pass a criminal record check and CPS clearance, though, like anyone else.

Without legal gay marriage, this is really about as fair as the state can get about it.
