2. you know, I hear the law against murder...
is an "OLD LAW". Bu$h doesn't have to abide so I am sure they think the Troops don't either. Could this get any worse?

Attorney: 7 Marines, sailor face murder charges
8 to be charged in death of Iraqi civilian in April, defense lawyer says
NBC NEWS EXCLUSIVE

BREAKING NEWS
Updated: 1 minute ago

SAN DIEGO - Military prosecutors plan to file murder, kidnapping and conspiracy charges against seven Marines and a Navy corpsman in the shooting death of an Iraqi civilian in April, a defense lawyer said Thursday.

The eight men are being held in the brig at the Camp Pendleton Marine Corps base north of San Diego, said Jeremiah Sullivan III, who represents one of the men.

The men served in Iraq with the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, and are members of the battalion's Kilo Company. The highest-ranking serviceman is a staff sergeant.

This is not the Haditha massacre.

Our leaders disregard international law when it comes to war crimes, and many of our troops are on their third or fourth combat tour. Something is gonna give!

13. This one sounds like a whole gang of murders.
There is more to this than mismanagement and battle fatigue.

14. there is a fundamental mismatch in goals/training/objectives....
Edited on Thu Jun-01-06 08:24 PM by mike_c
Most Marines and Army infantry are trained to be hyperviolent, to spread as much death and destruction as possible. They're trained for combat, for the violent environment of battle. Perhaps it's more accurate to say that they're trained to be efficiently hyperviolent. Not berserkers, but you don't want the guy at your back equivocating under fire.

They're not well trained to act as security forces and garrison occupation forces. What they're doing is reacting to every situation in a tactical threat context (not necessarily intelligent reactions, but that's another matter). That's what they're trained to do, even if they do receive some training in security and other garrison matters-- their primary purpose is to be an unstoppable battlefield force, whether that's in a tank battle in the open desert or in urban warfare. That's why they could roll through southern Iraq to Baghdad, or plow the ground with the bones of the dead in Fallujah, but they cannot conduct patrols in neighborhoods full of ordinary civilians for any length of time without killing people. Their tactics, their manner, their equipage, their vocabulary, their attitudes, EVERYTHING about them inflames the people around them, and every reaction is an immediate trigger for violence. The baseline of every patrol situation is the knife edge of threat. If it gets boring, you could get killed.

This misadventure has been very bad for the U.S. military.

16. Excellent explanation....
The thing is the Administration was warned over and over again that soldiers were not occupation, security and police forces...Rummy was warned..

They are going to come back and say, "We had no idea the military was not designed to perform occupation, security and police duties for long term"!!

Rummy and this administration have effectively damaged our military forces and the world knows it...

10. background story: NBC: Marines accused of cover-up in killing
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12972552/

WASHINGTON - As many as seven Marines are accused of dragging an innocent Iraqi man from his home in April, killing him in cold blood and then trying to cover up the crime, NBC News has learned.

Further, military officials tell NBC that at least one of the Marines has reportedly confessed in the killing, saying they find the allegations especially disturbing because the case appears to have been a premeditated killing and not carried out in the heat of combat.

<snip>

The alleged incident occurred April 26 in the town of Hamandiyah. The Marines are accused of dragging the innocent man from his home, shooting him to death, then planting an AK-47 rifle and a shovel next to his body, apparently to make it appear the man had been burying an IED, one of the roadside bombs that have been so deadly to U.S. forces in Iraq.
