SACRAMENTO - In a 4 to 3 Assembly Rules Committee vote, legislation calling for the impeachment of President George W. Bush and Vice President Richard Cheney was referred to the Committee for further consideration .. The resolution had been initially proposed on April 21, when Assemblyman Paul Koretz (D-West Hollywood) submitted language to amend AJR 39 .. http://www.pchpress.com/local/impeachment5-12-06.html

SACRAMENTO, CA (KNX) -- .. Koretz, a Democrat from the 42nd District, covering West Hollywood, says if the measure passes, it will be sent to Congress. Federal impeachment proceedings can be initiated by the joint resolution of the houses of a state legislature. "There's never been an administration like this that has violated the Constitution," said Koretz .. Two other states, Illinois and Vermont, are considering similar measures.

3. YES! YES! YES! YES! It will be the Second "Shot Heard Round the World"!
CHEERS FOR THE 4 VOTES *FOR*!!! I'm going to go find out who they are...

This will be an unprecedented, historic action! The states standing up to an out-of-control federal executive! It will put the cowardly Congress to shame! It will rally the nation! The entire nation will stand up and cheer! The entire world!

Go, California Democratic Legislators! You have much to attone for (i.e., Kevin Shelley/Diebold). THIS would redeem you! You CAN become the party of the people once again!

4. Here they are! Let them hear from you!
I assume all Dems voted for, and Repubs against (Repubs at bottom). But I don't know exactly who the 4 votes are--who was absent, or if alternate Loni Hancock voted. Just congratulate them all, and say you hope that had the PRIVILEGE of voting for this HISTORIC bill of impeachment.

6. This is probably the only way
to re-establish the constitution since whoever is advising the dems in Washington must be a republican.

7. Perhaps now Pelosi should consider putting impeachment back
on the table

She should be informed that giving aid and comfort to a traitor is in itself treason.

11. We need measured "investigate" rhethoric from Congress, so I'm ..
.. not too unhappy with Pelosi's stance, as I understand it.

But more grassroots folk might want to slap "Impeach" bumperstickers on their cars!

8. More info on Calif and other state impeachment resolutions...
Techincally, the Calif bill of impeachment has not been reported out yet (gone to the full Assembly) but it is moving along in the legislative process, and sponsor Paul Koretz is pleased.

From the pchpress.com article:

"The first legislative body to introduce such a resolution was in the state of Illinois. California was the second. And, other states that have started such efforts include Vermont, Wisconsin, New Mexico, Nevada and North Carolina."

Vermont, Wisconsin, New Mexico, Nevada and North Carolina! Didn't know that! Wow!

"Joining Koretz (submitter of the bill) in support of the Resolution are:
Assemblyman Mark Leno (D-San Francisco) as a joint author and
Assemblymembers
Rudy Bermudez (D-Norwalk),
Ron Calderon (D-Montebello),
Jackie Goldberg (D-Los Angeles),
Loni Hancock (D-Berkeley),
Jerome Horton (D-Inglewood) and
Mark Ridley-Thomas (D-Los Angeles) as co-authors."

-----

"The key reasons cited for impeachment include: 'the Bush Administration intentionally misleading the Congress and the American people regarding the threat from Iraq; exceeding constitutional authority to wage war by invading Iraq; exceeding constitutional authority by Federalizing the National Guard; conspiring to torture prisoners in violation of the “Federal Torture Act” and indicating intent to continue such actions; spying on American citizens in violation of the 1978 Foreign Agency Surveillance Act; leaking and covering up the leak of the identity of Valerie Plame Wilson, and holding American citizens without charge or trial.'"

21. It is constitutionally irrelevant.
States have no power to impeach the President. This is a purely symbolic move.

22. sorry, you are so very wrong.
jefferson's rule 603 of the house of representatives allows for a bill of impeachment to start in a state legislature, or with a grand jury. once passed by the full legislature, it moves to the us house, where it must be acted upon as a privileged resolution, that is, before any other business. although it is true that that action can be to vote to piss on it and light it on fire when it dries, it will still be on your cspan.

15. Way to be thinking stepn1lf!!!
I put up a post in my local Washington forum here in response to another members asking about it, but no one has bitten on the hook yet. In the meantime, all we can do is write to our local reps and urge them to demand justice about this administration which is using the constitution for toilet paper.

I have a copy of the articles of impeachment in my local indie bookstore with my name on it!
Good Luck to you!

Too bad he's leaving. He's term-limited this year. Hopefully the two Dems I've heard about who are trying for his seat will be like him.

18. Joy To The World
I hope this snow balls bigger and bigger. We need national media all over this like a Catholic priest on a 12 year alter boy.

I will e-mail all the elected officials in my state of oklahoma tomorrow asking them to sponsor a bill like this.
Also submit this to the local media to be run on the 9 o'clock news.

19. Off topic: I like your signature pic.
Even though I don't agree so much with the "gun-toting" part of it, it seems that (from the talk around here and other places on the web) vegetarianism is almost becoming a prerequisite for liberalism these days - and just because I'd rather suck on a urinal cake than give up eating meat doesn't make me any less of a liberal.

25. a word about illinois
first i want to note that one person credited with figuring this out, and getting it started here is someone who was a volunteer for the christine cegelis campaign. just to encourage those who think that only winning accomplishes anything. coming together can start a lot of things. so get off your chairs, people.

unfortunately, the illinois resolution was sent to the rules committee, where is stayed when the session ended. it currently has 20 co-sponsors. it cannot move until the assembly returns in october. but it can still get co-sponsors, and we will be working on doing that, and on keeping it in the public eye. we are having a conference call tomorrow, in fact.
karen yarborough (the sponsor) will be speaking at the vvaw memorial day rally on monday.
