Incumbent Beats Out Coach
Edited on Wed May-10-06 03:47 AM by Kiouni
I know it's sad but even though my state reversed race relations progress by cutting our schools into 3 segregated areas at least we didn't elect a football coach. It's a little progress i guess but considering so many democrats switched parties to make sure Osborne couldn't run is disturbing.

1. You'll need to change your heading to match the headline.

2. As I recall, in Lincoln especially, Nebraskans LIVE for Football!
Edited on Wed May-10-06 03:58 AM by ShortnFiery
I can't count the times my father had flatly *fired* Coach Tom Osborne for making a STUPID decision before the Husker's National Championship 70'-71', and after! Tom's a grand and God fearing guy, but Governor? I, and many others, don't think so. :-)

On Edit: I would have been one of those Democrats to switch parties and vote against Osborne had I been in the state. It seemed that almost every game on Thanksgiving Day Weekend, Tom Osborne would LET Barry Switzer's "Boomer Sooners" :puke: kick our butts in THE LAST FIVE MINUTES of the game. If you had to tolerate my young nephew blowing snot and having an all out hissy fit (not to mention dad's disappointment), then you would too! It's always freezing cold at that time of year. If it wouldn't have been for the hot cocoa and peppermint schnapps I enjoyed with my college buddies earlier, why, I think I might have melted down with my dad and nephew. Instead I just laughed inside at such inane sentiments. :P <tongue-in-cheek>

4. You know what, I am truly surprised. I thought for sure that the dolts in
this state would nominate Osborne.

I see Mr. "I am the grandson of a farmer" Ricketts won. He such a stereotype republican.

7. Wilkinson lost in Oklahoma after he coached too
From 1947 to 1963, Wilkinson's Oklahoma teams had an .826 winning percentage and won 14 league and three national championships. They won six of eight bowl games.

In 1964, a year after leaving the Sooners, Wilkinson legally changed his name from Charles to Bud, his more identifiable nickname. A conservative, he switched political parties and made a bid for a U.S. Senate seat. The new Republican lost by 21,390 votes (466,782 to 445,392) to Fred Harris, who rode the wave of Presidential winner Lyndon Johnson.
