Coalition Chopper Crashes in Afghanistan

By JASON STRAZIUSO, Associated Press Writer 3 minutes ago

KABUL, Afghanistan - A military transport helicopter with 10 U.S.-led coalition personnel aboard crashed while conducting combat operations in eastern
Afghanistan, a U.S. military spokeswoman said Saturday. No information on the fate of those on board was immediately released.

The CH-47 Chinook crashed late Friday while on a mission in support of Operation Mountain Lion, an offensive to root out Taliban and al-Qaida militants near the mountainous border with Pakistan. The crash was not the result of hostile fire, Lt. Tamara D. Lawrence said.

The military would not immediately say whether there were any casualties, and did not give the names or nationalities of the 10 passengers and crew on board. Rescue and recovery operations began at daybreak Saturday, Lawrence said.

The helicopter was conducting "operations on a mountaintop landing zone" when it crashed near Asadabad in Kunar province, about 150 miles east of Kabul, the capital, the military said.

6. "They're still doing rescue and recovery operations

....A military statement said other aircraft and crews near the landing zone during the crash confirmed hostile fire did not cause it. Lawrence said that although it was dark, the other coalition aircraft would have known if an enemy rocket had been fired.

Lawrence said the crash was being investigated and that little information was available.

"They're still doing rescue and recovery operations, so there's just a lot of unknown factors at this time," Lawrence said.

In September, a Chinook helicopter crashed in a mountainous area in the southeastern province of Zabul, killing all five American crew members, and in June, all 16 troops on board a Chinook died in Kunar when it was hit by a militant's rocket-propelled grenade — the deadliest attack against American forces in Afghanistan.

7. Taliban claim helicopter kill
<snip>

"The Taliban claim to have shot down a US helicopter in Afghanistan, killing all those on board.

An Aljazeera correspondent in Afghanistan said Muhamad Hanif, a spokesman for the Taliban, claimed that his movement had brought down the US Chinook.

The US-led forces said the 10 colaition soldiers on board were all killed, but denied that the Chinook, which crashed near the Pakistan border, had been brought down by the Taliban.

"We have no indication that that happened," said a spokeswoman responding to Hanif's claim."

US chopper crashes in Afghanistan

A United States military helicopter has crashed in Afghanistan, officials say.

The CH-47 Chinook carrying nine US-led coalition members, came down in Kunar province near a "mountaintop landing zone" 240km (150 miles) east of Kabul.

The crash was not the result of enemy fire, said a military spokeswoman, and it is not known if anyone has died.

Rescuers and other aircraft are at the scene, the spokeswoman said. The nationalities of the crew have not yet been released.

11. crashed during combat operations?
And it wasn't due to enemy fire?

Watch the follow-up on this story. The Pentagon is very predictable. They always hold off for a few days before releasing details. Everything is minimized. Then, after about 2 weeks, the story changes and we get more accurate details.

KABUL, Afghanistan - A U.S.-led coalition military transport helicopter crashed while conducting combat operations in the remote mountains of eastern Afghanistan, killing all 10 American soldiers on board, a U.S. military spokeswoman said Saturday.

The CH-47 Chinook crashed late Friday while on a mission in support of Operation Mountain Lion, an offensive to root out Taliban and al-Qaida militants near the border with Pakistan. The crash was not the result of hostile fire, said Lt. Tamara D. Lawrence, a coalition spokeswoman.

"The remains of all the 10 soldiers have been found and there are no survivors," she told The Associated Press. "There is no indication that the helicopter came down due to some enemy action."

The soldiers were part of a more than 20,000-strong coalition force, mostly operating in the volatile south and east of Afghanistan. About 18,000 of those forces are American.

US helicopter crashes in Afghanistan

By Robert Birsel 7 minutes ago

KABUL (Reuters) - A U.S. helicopter crashed while on combat operations in
Afghanistan, killing all 10 American soldiers and crew on board, the military said on Saturday.

The CH-47 Chinook crashed late on Friday near Asadabad, the capital of the mountainous eastern province of Kunar.

The U.S. military said there was no indication the crash was a result of enemy fire. Taliban insurgents, however, claimed they shot down the helicopter.

"The remains of 10 servicemen were found in the aircraft. There were no survivors," said U.S. military spokeswoman Lieutenant Tamara Lawrence, adding the cause was being investigated.

Insurgents shot down an MH-47 -- a special forces version of the CH-47 -- with a rocket-propelled grenade in Kunar in June last year. All 16 U.S. troops on board were killed.

22. I wonder if it was shotdown with a missile, as the one in Iraq was.
I notice that in this story and in another story from Basra in Iraq about another chopper crash, that there is a trend in the media to not put the number of casualties in the headline. It is almost as if they only want to discuss the equipment being lost rather than the lives being wasted by Bush and Blair's foolish military adventures.

The Mujahedin turned their fortunes in the Soviet-Afghan War when they got missiles from US to shootdown Soviet helicopters. I wonder if this helicopter was shotdown with a missile, as the British helicopter that was shotdown todday in Basra, Iraq.

23. Maybe the Russians are getting a little revenge for the 1980's stingers
Or maybe some powers are sending Bush a message - they will not stand idly by if Bush wants more war, especially with Iran.
