Sen. Lautenberg Asks CIA Director For Assessment of Damage to National Security from Leak of Agent's Identity

WASHINGTON, May 2 /U.S. Newswire/ -- In light of news reports that CIA Agent Valerie Plame was working to track Iran's effort to obtain nuclear weapons when her identity was leaked, U.S. Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) today called on CIA Director Porter Goss to provide an assessment of the damage to national security from the incident.

Lautenberg's letter to Goss is attached and below.

Lautenberg was the first Senator to call for Karl Rove's security clearance to be revoked or suspended while his role in the CIA leak case is under investigation.

2. Lautenberg is no softie. When I disagree with a vote he casts, he's a
real hardass about his position.

But in times like this, Lautenberg asks exactly the right questions. I love this. It's exactly what we need.

Good goin' Frank.

5. How much is he going to get out of Herr Busch's appointee?....
...Goss will claim the minimum possible damage he can get away with.

The again, maybe Lautenberg is setting up Goss...maybe he's hoping Goss will lie so that he can be charges with Obstruction of Justice.

8. And who will do the assessment? Goss???
Is anyone else concerned about what kind of crap assessment might come from Goss? Jesus, how many times haven't the minions of the cabal done a quick whitewash of an "investigation" only to later be used by the cabal as evidence that they have done nothing wrong. I think with all of the intimidation of the press & the CIA analysts I think that they think that they will be able to get away with another wash.

Sorry to be a debbie-downer , but there are many patterns from the administration that are highly predictable.

9. Watch this story - will Ws admin try to use his 'signing statements'
as a pretext for not sending the assessment to congress - as he has signed in numerous bill that the exec branch does not have to supply info to congress under the guise of national security... surely one of his extra-constitutional acts could be invoked to block this move.

Then again, the act would be a public one per using the signing statement and could trigger a lawsuit over his actions and thus the whole admin aggressive and unprecedented use of signing statements - putting it into the courts... you know the courts (esp SC) that just got a whole lot more bush friendly.

Doubt it will happen - but sooner or later bushco's actions based on their signing statements is going to wind up in court. God save us if the politicized courts rule against the Constitution.

10. Last I heard, the CIA was denying
it had made any such assessment (as if that's likely) :eyes:
