Gay Republicans warming to Bush
Despite anger with the paarty’s 2004 campaign tactics, many like new GOP initiatives

Cox News Service

WASHINGTON — Gay Republicans still are angry with the Bush White House about the way it ran the 2004 presidential campaign, but the frosty relationship is warming.

...

Baby steps, advises Patrick Guerriero, the president of Log Cabin Republicans, the lobbying organization for gay and lesbian Republicans, which wrapped up its national convention here this weekend.

...

“On the days that I have disagreements with people like (evangelist) Jerry Falwell, I’m reminded that I disagree more with (House Democratic leader) Nancy Pelosi on a hundred different issues,” Guerriero said in an interview during his group’s gathering.

It is a sentiment widely shared among the 400 Log Cabin Republicans who attended the convention, many of whom acknowledged the difficulty of being members of a political party that, as Guerriero put it, “has used us as a wedge issue” to win elections.

1. So...are the log cabiners so greedy they will take anything to get richer?
Is that what they are all about? I cannot imagine being so money hungry that I would act as official whipping group of the Puke party. Half of the Puke base would kill them if Shrub okayed it. The other half could care less, as long as they function nicely as a PR stunt. God, it must be aweful to be so pathetic.

25. Okay a couple of things here...
First off I find it amusing that gay Republicans couldn't resist an obvious phallic reference in the name of their group. Anyone know the story behind the name?

Next... why, why, why, would you want to associate with a party whose platform seeks to reduce you to a nonperson? No amount of money would make me want to hang out with Neo-nazis. So why the hell would anyone from the GLBTG community want to associate with a party that panders to bigoted fundamentalists?

I think the Log Cabin Republicans are irrelevant. Its apparent how little influence they have with the Republican leadership.

29. The moniker

is a reference to Abe Lincoln, who is imagined by some to have been gay. :eyes:

LCRs represent in part an older way of coping with gay life. There was historically a way of doing it that required a lot of money, secrecy, use of male privilege, closeted gay networks, great ability to manipulate people, and extreme viciousness in dealing with people who could or would expose you. The establishment has found such people useful in capacities that required these qualities...sadly dirty work, mostly. Ken Mehlman would be a relatively young representative of the type, but Ed Schrock and Mark Foley and David Dreier and Jim McCrery, probably Dana Rohrabacher too, and the like represent it more accurately.

Other LCRs seem to be people who see the advantages there are to the gay ghetto way of life and prefer them, or in any case simply find mainstream normality unbearable or unimaginable. Or simple selfishness tells them to let other people suffer and burn themselves out in the fight for gay equality, and to enjoy the fruits but to make no personal sacrifice.

you stated "Half of the Puke base would kill them if Shrub okayed it. The other half could care less, as long as they function nicely as a PR stunt. God, it must be aweful to be so pathetic"

Let me correct you to say the OTHER half would quietly turn their heads at the first half killing spree, then go shopping.

Every day I wonder when they will come for my son...every day. Groups like the Log Cabin Republicans make it more likely that will happen...sheesh they damn near give PERMISSION for that to happen by supporting that aswipe in chief.

I have ZERO tolerance and respect for that outfit. ZERO.

18. They seem like such self-hating gays to me.
Just by the statement alone, they are part of a party that is using them as a wedge issue, that loves to hate them.

It would be to me like going to an KKK Meeting because I don't like Blacks but was dating a Japanese Woman. I would still be on their hate list for being a 'racially mixed couple' but I wouldn't be the big bad black enemy. They'd still kick the crap out of me and prolly use me as an example of mixed race issues for their own propoganda. Mind you, I'm not racist, I judge people by what they do, not the color of their skin or country of origin, that is an example of the kind of hypocritical self abuse Log Cabin Republicans put themself into the line for.

69. it also shows that people with money live in a different world.
the rich do not have to deal with everyday life like the rest of us.

even when the proverbial shit REALLY, SERIOUSLY hits the fan, they will live at a level in society that will not be touched.

at least that is what they think. i think they may be surprised. there will be no gates and no security systems that will protect them from the angry masses.

the log cabin republicans want so much to be a part of this level of status hungry americans that they have literally sold their souls for it. they vote their wallet, because the laws won't (at least they think) affect them.

just look at the number of republicans who get caught, bent over, pants around their ankles. (duke cunningham's "hospitality suite" with multiple bedrooms? jeffie gannon's hotbed of republican johns?) the rules don't apply to them.

again, we shall see what happens. i almost look forward to it, but not quite. but that could change, too.

28. The thing is that
their desire to be the ideal white (even when they aren't) fiscally prudent and non-effeminate conservative, accepted by those they'd like to worship on their knees, is far more important to them than to ever be associated with or physically touch a working or lower class person. They would rather be dead than to share even a public perception of being supportive of or any way associated with the darker skinned people of this country. Their club is a way for them to openly discuss their disgust with anything non-white, and demonstrate that they are somehow still genetically untainted. It's not uncommon, for example, to hear a white or Latino gay person to say they would never have sex with a black person. That's an unspoken eligibility criteria for their club.

400? Wow.. that's some influential group in South Carolina. Not. I think you'd have a bigger showing of people if you asked every left handed guy named Bob that once voted Republican in South Carolina. 400 Log Cabin republicans in one state is not exactly earth shattering.

If they're dumb enough to support someone that used gay marriage as a hateful wedge issue, then have at it.. they're only screwing themselves. AND if they claim that they support Bush & Co. for financial reasons, they're not only dumb but masochistic... cuz not ONE of the cornerstones of Republicanism is being served by the nitwits in power.

the sailors guarding the gold dubloons
were avariciously stuffing their pockets with coins
when it went down.

And many years later,

from leather sacks of still gleaming booty.

The Log Cabinners will always lust after the party

Edited on Mon May-01-06 10:56 AM by Strathos
A gay republican is like a black KKK member, WAY out of place and completely unwanted.

65. Once upon a time
the world was full of "gays" who kept their secrets even to their graves. Very few of them were able to express themselves without risking life and limb in an effort to look as "normal" as possible. Every family had them:" the lifelong "bachelor" who never married; the uncle who had a "girlfriend" but who never talked about it; the family member who was more comfortable among those of their own gender; etc.

As someone said, a lot of them were discreet about their exploits in getting satisfaction, while others would talk about "queers" and "fags" with derogatory remarks, hoping to fend off such accusations on their own sexuality.

When the time came for a more direct approach, and when being gay was no longer a stigma, it made life so much easier for many who had lived closeted for their whole lives.

I find it so sad that so many refuse to give themselves a break and become more open about their sexuality, because frankly, it is a part of who they are, and not something to be either afraid of or secret. If gay republicans can't come out, they're only denying a very large part of themselves, and are showing that they are somehow resigned to being those of the past generations who could not accept themselves for what they were.

66. Some of the most vile, pathetic...
...motherfuckers on the face of the planet. It suddenly occurs to me that more than half the times I use the word motherfucker on this board, it is in reference to a Log Cabiner. They bring out the beast in me. Just as the rest of the country is giving Bush his abysmal poll numbers these idiots decide to warm up to him. I can't even begin to put into words how much I despise them.

71. There's always going to be blindly stupid people in the world.
Ignore them, since you can't legally put them down for stupidity. Put your time towards something constructive.

Arranging to have Jerry Falwell stoned, for example.
