Rice breaks with Bush over anthem

Rice breaks with Bush over anthem

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, in a rare public break with her boss, saw no problem with a Spanish-language version of the national anthem criticised by US President George W. Bush.

Mr Bush last week added a new dimension to a debate over immigration by rejecting a Latino recording of Nuestro Himno (Our Anthem) and declaring the Star-Spangled Banner should be sung in English.

...

"From my point of view, people expressing themselves as wanting to be Americans is a good thing," she said in an interview on CBS television's Face the Nation program.

"I've heard the national anthem done in rap versions, country versions, classical versions. The individualisation of the American national anthem is quite under way," she said.

5. I call bullshit.
Bob Scheiffer asked her repeatedly to answer yes or no to the question of the appropriateness of the National Anthem being sung in Spanish, and she did not give a straightforward answer. She did not say yes, she did not say no. He even commented to the effect that she was dodging the question, and she went off on an immigration tangent, but again declined to provide a direct answer.

17. Favorite version of the SPB

My favorite version was arranged and sung by Marvin Gaye at the 1983 NBA All-Star Game in Los Angeles. Marvin Gaye was murdered by his father less than 14 months later...

21. Condi "Osama Who?" Rice commenting on a domestic issue
when she's the (utterly unqualified) Sec.of State. Obviously, she's trying to sound like "presidential" timber.

Just a few reminders to the public of her "What's al Queda?" attitude prior to 9/11 will be all that's needed to torpedo Rice's presidential ambitions.
