Guantanamo Bay detainee suffers from depression (but, * said all was OK!)
One of the Britons held by the United States in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, has been diagnosed as suffering from depression since being locked up without charge, the Guardian has learned.

The revelation undermines the claim at the weekend by President George Bush about the wellbeing of the detainees. Mr Bush told Breakfast with Frost: "They are being well treated, and they will go through a military tribunal at some point in time... a military tribunal which is... in line with international accords." The issue of the detention of nine Britons and three British residents will be a flashpoint during his visit to the UK, which starts today.

<snip>
The diagnosis of depression was made by a US military forensic psychiatrist who examined Feroz Abassi, 23.

<snip>
Mr Abassi is one of two Britons designated by Mr Bush to face the military tribunal, the rules of which have also sparked worldwide condemnation for being biased towards the prosecution.

1. Knowing how well
Bush,the CIA, and FBI performed with preventing 9-11, and the Iraq war, how can anyone believe there aren't innocents being held incommunicado? Even Dennis Miller should see problems with Gitmo.

3. well imagine that... locked up for 2 years without charge...
facing, at some indeterminate date, a biased tribunal with death penalty powers. Held in isolation, 30 minutes of exercise and one shower per week. Could be a little depressing.

4. When Guantanamo caging was announced...
...I predicted here at DU there would be prisoner hunger strikes and suicides. There have been both. As I recall one hunger strike reportedly lasted almost two months and god knows how many suicides or attempted suicides there've been.

You don't have to be an expert or a psychic to understand these things. Has the world gone mad? :shrug:
