Pentagon mulling private security force for 2,000 Iraqi sites (oil)
WASHINGTON, July 18 (AFP)

The Pentagon is considering a plan to train a private security force in Iraq to guard up to 2,000 sites to ease the burden on US troops, The New York Times said Friday.

The force would guard pipelines and government facilities around Iraq, providing jobs for unemployed Iraqis and easing tensions created by the US military occupation, military officials told the daily.

Pipelines are among the sites that have been targetted in almost daily attacks against US-led forces which have left at least 33 US soldiers dead since May 1, when President George W. Bush announced an end to the war.

The private force, which would be separate from the new Iraqi Army and Iraqi police force, would be composed chiefly of former Iraqi soldiers armed with small weapons, which has raised some security concerns, the officials said. ---

1. HAHAHAHAHA
Rummy is off his meds again.

So Rummy, Wolfowitz and Feith decided to guard every inch of the pipe-lines, by "arming former republican guard troops".....HAHAHAHAHAHAHAA

3. This Is Too Rich
And certainly futile.

Such a force will simply be a reconnaisance element for the sabotuers, as well as a steady conduit for their supply with small arms.

Such equipment, on the scale at which it exists in Iraq, cannot be protected against a determined foe, by any practicable measure.

4. Private armies (DynCorp) live above the law.
If you are near a pipeline, they kill you. They also make $10,000 a month untaxed. The DEA and the pentagon have paid them $2.3 Billion in '02 to do what the pentagon could have done for a third of that. It is composed of 'retired' right wing military officers and elite troops. They have a reputation for not leaving any wittneses. When the military leaves or is replaced in Iraq, the taxpayers will continue paying these people to protect the oil interests for the bfee. This is a bad thing.

5. good luck to Dyncorp
They will be facing a Hizbollah-like guerrilla night-mare.

But it isnt Dyncorp, its "former republican guard troops", and besides that, it is Literally impossible to guard thousands of miles of pipe-lines, impossible. Maybe 2 million troops stationed 10 feet apart 24 hours a day, maybe.....but then some Jihad A-hole could still take pot-shots, hundreds of yards away, or drive a truck into the pipe-line.

6. Your Estimate, Sir
Is a pretty decent one. In the old days, protecting railroads, a squad per kilometer was considered desireable.

7. These were the ones who were taken out in the bombing in Riyadh
The Vinnell Corp is also there -----these guys are the nearest thing to the GESTAPO and SS that the US has. Ruthless types who have no laws--- no rules. They ask for no Quarter and give none.
