Flaherty wins Habay's seat in special election
To fill unexpired term of convicted lawmaker through end of year
Wednesday, April 12, 2006

By Ed Blazina, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Complete but unofficial results showed Mr. Flaherty defeated Republican Mike Dolan, 26, of O'Hara by a count of 5,545 to 5,437. It will be the first time in more than 40 years that the district, which includes Fox Chapel, Hampton and parts of Ross, Shaler and O'Hara, will be represented by a Democrat.
Mr. Flaherty will replace Jeff Habay of Shaler, who resigned after he was convicted of criminal charges for using his office staff to do campaign work when they were supposed to be working for the state. He also faces additional charges that he tried to frame a political opponent for mailing Mr. Habay a powdery white substance when police say Mr. Habay mailed it to himself.

State Rep. Dan Frankel, D-Squirrel Hill, head of the House Democratic Campaign Committee, said winning a traditionally Republican seat gives the party great momentum heading into this year's elections, where incumbent Gov. Ed Rendell is leading the ticket. The win puts the breakdown in the House at 109 Republicans and 94 Democrats."This would have been one of the harder seats to win," Mr. Frankel said. "Incumbency means a great deal. a very seasoned, mature candidate."

Mr. Flaherty's grass roots coordinator, Marty Marks, said his candidate did well throughout the district, where Democrats hold a slight voter registration edge despite the district's history of voting Republican."We performed better than Democrats normally perform everywhere, throughout the district," he said.

Good morning, DU! It was a great night to be a Dem in Pittsburgh last night, and particularly in my home district where FOR THE FIRST TIME IN OVER FORTY YEARS, we elected a Dem. to represent us in my state district! ! ! This was a special election to replace a DISGRACED, CONVICTED REPUBLICAN POLITICIAN ! ! ! My candidate's GOP opponent in this special race was a W embryo - a trust fund baby whose grandfather & father made their billions in the family business, Federated Investors, which the SEC has found guilty (in Nov. of 2005) of "ill-gotten gains" from ripping off their own mutual fund investors. Federated was ordered to pay back $72 million. So can everyone say, GOP campaign funded by white collar crime? Is that somehow better than being funded by a mob grandfather who made his millions by dealing drugs? Damn right it isn't! The 26 yr. old GOP candidate had been arrested 6 times and convicted 5 times of DUI. The only job this Bush clone has ever held is as "Vice President of Govt. Relations" (i.e., lobbyist) for one of his Dad's companies, which leases out 11 small corporate jets and has 17 full time employees! In terms of TV advertising and mailings, it's fair to say that the R outspent the D about 3 to 1. And the Democrat STILL won. I was working the polls from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., and I can tell you more Rs voted than Ds. The Dem candidate got R votes, people! So join me in rejoicing. I can tell you, after my work on the Kerry campaign, it was damn sweet to WIN!

1. Congratulations to You All!
The winners know that they are to be congratulated, but so are the "losers", in that they will be facing a much brighter future as a gift from the people they opposed.

3. That is HUGH!1!!11!!1111!!
This does NOT bode well for Santorum either. That's usually a slam dunk district for the GOPers and to have Democrat win there is extraordinary. WELL DONE! :applause:

6. Great news!
Gee, those were pedigree Republicans in the Syndicate, too. This is very good news indeed. Rick Santorum will need to think about his future as a K street lobbyist soon.

7. Shawn Flaherty...
Edited on Wed Apr-12-06 06:27 AM by yibbehobba
Why is that name familiar?

Edit: Nevermind. Needed to RTFA.

For that, Mr. Flaherty credits his late father, former Pittsburgh Mayor and Allegheny County Commissioner Pete Flaherty

8. Right now the GOP knows it will be bad in November
their only question is how bad. How badly will they lose Congress. They're probably already planning '07 by counting conservative and moderate D's and hoping they can get them to cross over every now and then. And, how many can be counted on to vote against impeachment.

9. Congratulations! Good news.
But I would caution against reading too much into this. I would think we should be able to easily beat a candidate from a recently exposed corrupt company who also has 5 DUI's. It is disturbing that it was this close.

Perhaps the good news besides the win is that the best candidate the Repubs could come up with is so flawed.

10. Congrats, but it's kind of sad in a way - special election to replace
a convicted Republican criminal, with 26 yo 5 time convicted DUI criminal and some Billionaire for Bush type whose company has been playing fast and loose with the rules.

And the Dem candidate only gets 51% of the vote?

The loyalty to Party of those folks just amazes me. It does not matter what or who you are, or anything you stand for - as long is there is an (R) beside your name.

11. Local dem committee people generally old, infirm and in the way.
Edited on Wed Apr-12-06 07:27 AM by Divernan
A major part of the grass roots work for Flaherty was a group of well-informed, aggressive high school students who did a lot of door to door work. I volunteered as a former law school classmate of Shawn's, accepted responsibility for 10 districts and could not find ONE SINGLE FRIGGING committee man or woman who was willing to go door to door. Out of the 16 (and there should have been 20 but in some districts there were NO committee people) only 2 deigned to put out five signs each. The rest of them claimed they were too busy or too infirm to do any canvassing, or even get five people in their district to put out yard signs. Their entire involvement consisted of letting us put a sign in their front yard. I got some volunteers elsewhere, but personally covered 2 districts door to door on my own. This has been a problem in Allegheny County for decades. The last vestiges of the old Dem machine remaining are these 70 and 80 something committee people. This is the only thing in their lives which they consider makes them "somebody" and they have blocked two generations of younger Dems from getting involved in the bottom rung of party leadership. The GOP doesn't seem to make that mistake, or perhaps it's that GOP committeepeople don't so desperately hang onto those positions cause they have nothing else in their lives.

What the Dem party in Allegheny Cty. PA needs is a leader who will say, "Thank you for all your years of service, we'll send absentee ballots to the nursing home." Well, maybe not be quite so blunt. But these old and useless warhorses need to be put out to pasture. These are not appointments for life!

And although the media mentioned the candidate's grandfather founded Federated Investors, none of them referred to the company's fraudulent behavior or SEC fines.

13. We have been struggling with similar issues in Georgia.
There is an idea floating around of creating a "advisory board" or something similar so that some post seat holders who either can't or don't participate much can still be connected to the party but open up their seats to new blood who perhaps would be more active. We would draw up specific responsibilities for post seat holders, and if you can't meet the requirements, you would be invited to give up your post seat and move the the advisory board.

That's a very kind way to ease them out. I'll pass that idea along to some people here.

19. I didn't mean my post as a negative on the Dem committee - was thinking
more about 49% who had to vote RePug, simply because it was an (R) - in spite of their backgrounds, criminality or any sort of character issues.

If a Dem breaks the law or does something underhanded - I want them punished. Those on the Right only seem to think that way if it's not one of theirs. If one of theirs, then it's time to change the rules and blame the liberals.

They're so brainwashed. It's scary sometimes the limits they'll push to protect their party. Cultish even.

And to vote for a guy who's 26 with 5 convictions for DUI? outrageous. If you rob a store, they might level multiple counts against you for that one incident - but you don't normally get busted for DUI more than once in the same evening! That shows an incredible lack of judgement, but it's ok to vote for the guy cause he's got an (R) beside his name.

22. How do committeemen get on in your area?
Is there a convention? Petitions? In NY, you have to get petition signatures. You can always get petition signatures for your people and then primary the current crowd. At least, that's how it is in NY. There are probably other things you can do. A Democratic Club is a good way to start. You meet lots of new people that way.

14. WooHoo! Congrats and thank you Divernan!
I'm close but outside of this district and was elated to hear that Flaherty won. I saw Senator Orie (R) commercials backing Dolan and wanted to hurl :puke:. I can only dream of the day she is also ousted.

Thanks for all your work, Divernan. Now let's get rid of Rick and Melissa this year too.

You deserve credit and congratulations for your hard work. This is another example that Dean is right. Show up and fight for these seats. People will respond if you offer them an alternative.

24. Great job, Divernan.
I'm in Westmoreland County and have been watching this race with interest. I didn't realize that Dolan's family business was Federated Investors.

It was intriguing how Dolan brushed off his DUI's as just "college behavior". Convicted 5 times! Do you know anyone who has been convicted that many times for DUI's? The only ones I know are either in jail or under house arrest. Dolan has a BIG problem.
