British government workers strike
http://feeds.bignewsnetwork.com/?sid=2f6c0dcdfe6b5771

Britain's local government workers stranded tens of thousands of motorists Tuesday in a 24-hour strike over pensions.

The work stoppage by more than 1.5 million workers closed hundreds of schools, libraries and leisure centers across the country and disrupted services including garbage collection, street cleaning and court proceedings.

The unionized government workers object to attempts to raise the retirement age. Currently, they may retire if their age and length of work add up to 85. Under some circumstances, that means workers can collect a full pension beginning at age 60.

1. British local gov't workers
have always been militant. They were the ones who brought down the last "old" Labour government, in 1979.

So this is very unsurprising news. I'm sure Tony Blair fully expected this, and budgeted for it when he proposed the change.
