U.S. Releases 37 Guantanamo Prisoners -Official

WASHINGTON (Reuters)

The United States released 37 prisoners who had been held at a prison at the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba, where terrorism suspects captured in Afghanistan and elsewhere have been held without charges, a senior defense official said on Friday.

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the released prisoners were being transported to Afghanistan. The official also said "less than 10" other prisoners were being transported to Guantanamo to be held there. The official would not state the nationality of the prisoners involved or the reason for the release.

The military is holding at Guantanamo more than 600 foreign nationals from Afghanistan and dozens of other countries. ---

1. This seems to be rather big news

did it get caught in the server problems earlier or is it a dupe and I missed the other one? :shrug:

Are we going to see any followup on these 37 prisoners from the fair and balanced media? These people were held IN CAGES for almost two years without access to lawyers or being charged and now they are released, just as Tony Blair zips through the US on his 7-hour tour? We need a LOT more information about the Gitmo prisoners. Don't let this issue fade into the background.
