Abu Ghraib Dog Handler Faces Prosecutor
Abu Ghraib Dog Handler Faces Prosecutor
By DAVID DISHNEAU, Associated Press
Friday, March 17, 2006

(03-17) 10:11 PST FORT MEADE, Md. (AP) --

An Army prosecutor said Friday that a dog handler at Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison violated training on treating prisoners humanely and using the minimum amount of force necessary.

"American soldiers don't do that," Maj. Christopher Graveline told a military jury, gesturing toward enlarged photographs of detainees being menaced by dogs during closing arguments in the court martial of Sgt. Michael Smith.

"And we don't do it because we think it's fun. And we don't do it for our laughs. And we don't take pictures of it."
(snip)

The Army officer who directly oversaw security at Abu Ghraib in late 2003 and early 2004 testified Thursday that there was nothing inhumane about having a dog bark at detainees and that unmuzzled dogs helped maintain order at the prison.
