US upbeat on Iran talks
By Evelyn Leopold and Irwin Arieff

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - U.N. Security Council ambassadors reported progress for the first time on Thursday on how to rein in Iran's nuclear ambitions, although the United States acknowledged differences remained.

China appeared to be more flexible on a draft council statement but Russia was said to hang tough on how much the Security Council should be involved in Tehran's nuclear program, which the West believes is a cover for bomb making, two envoys close to the talks said.

"Everybody has agreed it is important to send a strong signal to Iran that their nuclear weapons program is not permissible," said U.S. Ambassador John Bolton.

"I would describe today's meeting as the best we have had so far. There are still areas of disagreement" Bolton said.

1. Translation from military speech:
"But Bolton said he also expected the group to concentrate on long-term strategy, beyond the statement. "It is for political directors to discuss broader aspects of this, what comes after this presidential statement,".But Bolton said he also expected the group to concentrate on long-term strategy, beyond the statement. Our Nukes are getting old and obsolete. You are giving us the perfect cover to get rid of the "oldy but goody", eliminate your concerns, and replace our arsenal with upgraded weapons, all in the name of peace. Do you want crispy, or extra crispy?

3. Bolton: UN Will Send Iran Strong Signal
UNITED NATIONS (AP) - U.S. Ambassador John Bolton said Thursday the U.N. Security Council appears determined to send a "strong and clear signal" to Tehran about its suspect nuclear program, after a meeting of the powerful U.N. body that he described as the best so far.

In an informal gathering of the 15 council members, diplomats agreed to hold the first formal Security Council consultations on Friday — a sign that a split between Britain, France and the United States on the one hand, and China and Russia on the other, may have closed somewhat.

In addition, senior officials from six key countries involved in negotiations over
Iran's nuclear program will convene Monday to try to hammer out a final deal and discuss what the council ought to do after it makes its first statement on Iran.

"I would describe today's meetings as the best we've had so far," Bolton said after the talks, the full council's second informal meeting on Iran. "The mood of the discussion is certainly in the direction of a strong and clear signal to Iran on the part of the Security Council."

4. Hey, Corporate Media!
You don't need to report B*lton's statements about what the U.N. plans--let the U.N.'s press people take care of getting their message out.

5. You mean Bolton doesn't speak
for the UN? No way! As a general rule, if Bolton's happy, I'm not happy. So I hope Bolton is just lying or spinning on this. We'll probably find out the official UN position soon.

6. he's blowing hot air
"China's U.N. Ambassador Wang Guangya was more equivocal in brief remarks to the press.

"I think the differences are still there," he said. "There are some common points but there are also some differences."

so the truth is that NO progress has been made.
