AP: Justice Ginsburg Reveals Details of (death)Threat
Justice Ginsburg Reveals Details of Threat
Mar 15
By GINA HOLLAND
Associated Press Writer
WASHINGTON

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said she and former Justice Sandra Day O'Connor have been the targets of death threats from the "irrational fringe" of society, people apparently spurred by Republican criticism of the high court.

Ginsburg revealed in a speech in South Africa last month that she and O'Connor were threatened a year ago by someone who called on the Internet for the immediate "patriotic" killing of the justices....

***

Ginsburg said the Web threat was apparently prompted by legislation in Congress, filed by Republicans, that would bar judges from relying on foreign laws or court decisions.

"It is disquieting that they have attracted sizable support. And one not-so-small concern _ they fuel the irrational fringe," she said in a speech posted online by the court earlier this month and first reported Wednesday by LegalTimes.com.

According to Ginsburg, someone in a Web site chat room wrote: "Okay commandoes, here is your first patriotic assignment ... an easy one. Supreme Court Justices Ginsburg and O'Connor have publicly stated that they use (foreign) laws and rulings to decide how to rule on American cases. This is a huge threat to our Republic and Constitutional freedom. ... If you are what you say you are, and NOT armchair patriots, then those two justices will not live another week."...

6. Isn't/shouldn't this be the sort of thing that authorities can use
the Patriot Act (and other recently enacted 'tools') for - to find out the people making these threats?

If these types of threats are aren't stopped, then the only type of people who would be 'safe' sitting on a bench would be people who belong to the "irrational fringe" of society.

28. nice timing? -- Court orders DeLay subpoenas halted
nice timing?

Court orders DeLay subpoenas halted Mar. 14, 2006 at 11:07AM

U.S. Rep. Tom DeLay, R-Texas, won a legal skirmish when a court invalidated 30 prosecution subpoenas and ordered that no more be issued, reports said. A Texas State Court of Appeals ruled Monday that all prosecution subpoenas must wait until it rules on an appeal brought by the state. The appeal, on which oral arguments will be held March 22, contests a judge's dismissal of conspiracy charges against the former U.S. House majority leader involving Texas' 2002 legislative elections.

"All of those subpoenas are worthless," DeLay's lawyer, Dick DeGuerin, told the Austin (Texas) American-Statesman. DeGuerin said he would make sure all who were subpoenaed get the ruling "so they can thumb their nose" at Travis County, Texas, District Attorney Ronnie Earle.

"The point here is Ronnie Earle is abusing his office," another DeLay attorney, Matt Hennessy, told the Houston Chronicle. An Earle spokesman said prosecutors, who were trying to get ready for DeLay's eventual trial, would abide by the ruling.

29. O'Connor was almost killed in a July 4, 2003 ceremony.
http://p216.ezboard.com Check out the media control here. Looks like a failed attempted assassination gone down the memory hole.

Not many people know that Supreme Court justice Sandra Day O'Connor was nearly killed on July 4 of 2003 in Philadelphia during a ceremonial opening of the National Constitution Center. What a psy-ops event that would have been.

All the news articles have been scrubbed from online.:wtf:
I read the interviews when they were still available online with the stage hand union members who said that they warned that a 600 pound set piece was dangerous.People were sent to the hospital and one was knocked unconscious.

The stage hands were used as patsies by an outside ontractor who was warned by the stage hands that the set piece was dangerous. www.nbc10.com/4july/2312737/detail.html

How Well Did the Press Cover the Constitution Center?
By Ed Goppelt Tuesday, 07/08/03
....
Would a USA Today reader even realize that a Supreme Court Justice was almost killed on national television? Only in the fifteenth paragraph of USA Today's story does the paper get around to mentioning that dignitaries "got a scare during the ceremony."

In my opinion some of the best reporting on the story comes from the Philadelphia Inquirer. See Schogol's 7/6/03 stories on the accident and previous black eyes to the City's reputation. Soteropoulos and Twyman's piece describing the scenery's fall 7/4/03 and Down, Wood & Tanfani's 7/6/03 report on the reasons for the frame's fall.

But even the Inquirer appears unwilling at times to acknowledge the seriousness of what happened.

For example, officials injuries are consistently characterized as minor, not just by the officials--this is to be expected--but by the reporters themselves.

* "none had serious injuries" (Inquirer-Downs, Wood & Tanfani)
* "It struck and slightly injured Street, Specter and Joseph M. Torsella"
(Inquirer-Schogol)

Why not let the facts speak for themselves?

* Of the five people injured, four of them considered their condition serious enough to seek medical attention from area hospitals.

* NCC CEO Joe Torsella lost consciousness after being hit on the head. See Kitty Caparella's 7/7/03 story

Some news organizations got basic facts wrong. For example, what did Justice O'Connor say when the frame collapsed around her and other dignitaries?

According to Channel Six O'Connor said "we could have been hit, bumped." I was watching the Channel Six's coverage of the ceremony. I heard O'Connor say something different: "we could all have been killed there."

ALL THESE ARTICLES HAVE BEEN SCRUBBED:

* "It struck and slightly injured Street, Specter :grr: and Joseph M. Torsella"

ALL THESE ARTICLES HAVE THE LINK BROKEN:
(Just the Philadelphia Inquirer?)

A Supreme Court Justice was almost killed during the dedication ceremony. If reporters had covered the Center seriously would we have been spared this near disaster? I don't know, but I do think the press can and must do a better job of covering the Center.

U.S. celebrates 227th birthday
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The celebrations offered snapshots of the nation at hundred year intervals: Troops coming home from Iraq hugged loved-ones for the first time in months, President Bush marked the centennial of aviation, and Americans feted the birth of their independence 227 years ago.

The U.S. flag waves in the breeze as Fourth of July fireworks light up the night sky in Temple, Texas.
By Jerry Larson, Temple Daily Telegram, APAt Forbes Field in Topeka, Kan., parents, spouses and children of 135 National Guard soldiers, who were dispatched to Iraq five months ago, held emotional reunions.

"I'm not sure that any of us really appreciates the struggles George Washington went through in Valley Forge. This kind of personalizes those sacrifices," said Bill Burkett of Muskogee, Okla., whose daughter Stephanie was among the returning troops. Other troops came home Friday to North Carolina, Wisconsin and Maine.

Anecita Hudson, whose son was a POW in Iraq, began celebrating the holiday Wednesday at Fort Bliss, Texas, where Army Spc. Joseph Hudson and other former POWs received medals for bravery. The Hudsons were back in their hometown of Alamogordo, N.M., for the Fourth of July.

"Here in America, I really see that people are happy on the Independence Day," Anecita Hudson said. "It's really kind of overwhelming to see them all celebrating."

In Dayton, Ohio, President Bush climbed a flag-draped stage flanked by military jets to praise the work of U.S. troops and celebrate the 100th anniversary of flight in the ometown of the Wright brothers. "Today and everyday, the people of this land are grateful for their freedom, and we are proud to call ourselves citizens of the United States of America," Bush told a cheering crowd on a tarmac at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.

Natalie Neal, 39, of nearby West Chester, Ohio, was up before dawn to secure a place in the crowd of thousands. "There's not a better way to spend the Fourth of July than with your military and with your president," Neal said.

34. Wow! I never heard of this ~ I wonder if that's why SDOC decided to
retire! I wondered why she was leaving ~ has a SC justice ever resigned before? No one really questioned her convenient retirement.

It's interesting too that Judge Ginsberg is speaking out and specifically mentioning Republicans and their followers as the culprits, right after Sandra Day O'Connor leaves. What was done about these threats I wonder?

Maybe Ginsberg is, in a way, asking for help? How on earth can the court make decisions when they are under threat like this?

I wouldn't doubt that that was no accident. Was it ever investigated and why did they say there would no lawsuits?

This administration has been spying on peace activists, have they been spying on rightwing groups who were KNOWN to have threatened SC justices? And the press as usual, is covering it all up.

And, one more thing. In light of all this, why were Ann Coulter's suggestions to poison Justice Stephens not taken way more seriously? I think that's what Justice Ginsberg is saying. That Republicans like Ann Coulter are rousing up the nutcases to threaten judges. It's interesting that she said this now ~

31. related: Justice Ginsburg reveals details of threat - rightwing wackos
http://www.beaufortgazette.com/24hour/politics/story/3230032p-11967461c.html

WASHINGTON (AP) - Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said she and former Justice Sandra Day O'Connor have been the targets of death threats from the "irrational fringe" of society, people apparently spurred by Republican criticism of the high court.

Ginsburg revealed in a speech in South Africa last month that she and O'Connor were threatened a year ago by someone who called on the Internet for the immediate "patriotic" killing of the justices.

Security concerns among judges have been growing.

Conservative commentator Ann Coulter joked earlier this year that Justice John Paul Stevens should be poisoned. Over the past few months O'Connor has complained that criticism, mainly by Republicans, has threatened judicial independence to deal with difficult issues like gay marriage.

<snip>

Ginsburg said the Web threat was apparently prompted by proposals in Congress, filed by Republicans, that tell judges to stop relying on foreign laws or court decisions.

The rabid wingnuts are only spurred forward by the freaks that are controlling our Congress and Senate.

35. Ginsburg Faults GOP Critics, Cites a Threat From 'Fringe'
By Charles Lane
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, March 17, 2006; A03

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg assailed the court's congressional critics in a recent speech overseas, saying their efforts "fuel" an "irrational fringe" that threatened her life and that of a colleague, former justice Sandra Day O'Connor.

Addressing an audience at the Constitutional Court of South Africa on Feb. 7, the 73-year-old justice, known as one of the court's more liberal members, criticized various Republican-proposed House and Senate measures that either decry or would bar the citation of foreign law in the Supreme Court's constitutional rulings. Conservatives often see the citing of foreign laws in court rulings as an affront to American sovereignty, adding to a list of grievances they have against judges that include rulings supporting abortion rights or gay rights.

Though the proposals do not seem headed for passage, Ginsburg said, "it is disquieting that they have attracted sizeable support. And one not-so-small concern -- they fuel the irrational fringe."

She then quoted from what she said was a "personal example" of this: a Feb. 28, 2005, posting in an Internet chat room that called on unnamed "commandoes" to ensure that she and O'Connor "will not live another week."
