Violence and Aids reap harvest of young lives

One in four men who die prematurely in Cape Town is murdered, and Aids is the cause of early death for one in six women.

Those are the shocking figures to emerge from the presentation of a report to the city of Cape Town health committee on Wednesday.

Entitled Cause of Death and Premature Mortality in Cape Town (2001), the report depicts the devastation being wreaked on young Capetonians by murder and HIV and Aids.

Homicide and Aids top the list of causes of premature deaths - homicide first and HIV and Aids second for men, with HIV and Aids first and homicide second for women.
