Bush Renews Veto Threat Amid Moves to Kill Ports Deal (Update1)

March 8 (Bloomberg) -- President George W. Bush renewed his threat to veto legislation that would block a state-owned Dubai firm's takeover of some terminal operations at six U.S. ports as leaders in his own party prepared a measure to kill the plan.

Republican leaders said the House later today will attach language preventing DP World from assuming control of the U.S. operations of Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Co. to an emergency measure that provides $92 billion for military operations in Iraq and Hurricane Katrina recovery efforts.

The House plans to pass the funding bill next week. If the Senate follows suit, the president will use his first veto to reject it, his spokesman said today. ``The president's position is unchanged,'' Scott McClellan told reporters traveling with Bush in Gulf Coast states ravaged by Katrina in August.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert said Republican leaders felt it necessary to block to deal to bolster homeland security. ``We want to protect Americans,'' Hastert, an Illinois Republican, said. ``We have a point of view on this, and we're going to move forward.''

6. Katrina funds are in that bill too. He'd be happy to blame that on
congress too.

5. It's scary to think
how much power the kleptocracy really has that they care so little about their cipher's political interests. That this empty suit of a president is so utterly idiotic as to assassinate his own presidency at their behest is also stunning.

8. Incredible, Astrad.
You nailed the whole situation in two sentences. My guess is that the kleptocracy views Bush and his presidency as fully depreciated assets.

7. The Veto seems to fly in the face of
all those who say "Bush didn't know" anything about it - if that was true - why & how was he so sure he would use a veto right off the bat.

Compulsive L-I-A-R-S!

11. The real split begins...
between Bushjr and his ego ... and those fighting for reelection. This split has been simmering since before 04 - but is now coming to a full boil. The WhiteHouse keeps pushing things that fit with Bush's need to "win" on any point in order to prove that he is a more "powerful" pres than bushsr was... and the congressional GOP, recognizing bushjr's greatly diminished approval ratings are about to drag them down... to the point of not being reelected.

On the torture - it was mostly "the usual suspects" in terms of those GOP members willing to attempt (til the signing statement) to take on the president - but now you have an outright revolt and reaction/threat. It is notable that some of the revoltees are not the "usual suspects" (those that are willing to criticize buschco but that in the end often vote with bushco.) I think this is the first of many such exchanges to unfold between now and November.
