TV ads push Iraq War support

WASHINGTON -- In an early sign of the imagery that may flood the nation's television screens as congressional elections approach this fall, a conservative political group closely aligned with the Bush administration has launched a blitz of television ads to shore up sagging public support for the war in Iraq.

The television commercials feature vivid portraits of smoke pouring from the World Trade Center and the aftermath of terrorist attacks in Madrid and London as veterans of the Iraq war and parents of fallen soldiers make the case for continuing the U.S. military campaign in Iraq.

In what appears to be a test before the advertising campaign is rolled out to a broader audience, the political group Progress for America spent more than $1 million to air the commercials in Minnesota over a two-week period, according to a source familiar with the ad buy.

...

One of the ads includes complaints that the media coverage of the war has been misleading.

"You'd never know it from the news reports, but our enemy in Iraq is Al Qaeda, the same terrorists who killed 3,000 Americans on 9/11," the ad says.

32. I've been subjected to these in Minnesota as well...
...they're incredibly misleading--probably criminally so. They're edited to expressly imply that Saddam was behind 9/11. Then they're basically just overly sentimental voice-overs of three or four Iraqi war vets saying how great the work they're doing in Iraq is. I heard rumor one of the featured vets was a desk-jockey through his whole stint in Iraq.

What really burns my ass though is that you could NEVER get a commercial on the air that advocated bringing the troops home immediately.

As a matter of fact, Adbuster has fought for years with various media corps to air or publish ads that advise American to rethink their consumption habits and the effects those have on the planet. They publish a sample collection of rejection letters on their website....

No one of any intelligence watches the TV news anymore (or reads newspapers for that matter).

35. i think they've been in iowa even longer
the local station even did a piece at the top of their news cycle because so many people were calling in complaining. evidently they 'checked' and every word was 'true' so they had to let it air.

yeah, right. it only goes to show how cunning the liars are getting.

:hi: It is quite interesting that the likes of WCCO and KARE would air these ads, yet chose not to air negative ads against Pawlenty because they couldn't "verify" the ads. :eyes: So much for the "marketplace of ideas."
I feel like I lose IQ points when I watch TV news. How does on keep a job when the principle idea is to inform, but if their viewers come away from their "news" more uninformed then before. Welcome to bu$hworld.

Check out our Minnesota forum when you have a chance. We have quite a wonderful group. :hi:

12. Is there no legal means of challenging this group's intentional,...
,...misrepresentation of the facts? These misleading and, at times, totally FALSE ads MUST BE SUBJECT to some legal standard,...somewhere.

Does "free speech" include false/misleading/fraudulent speech?

To me, these advertisements are the shit in the political toilet and they must be curtailed.

22. The dangers of public relations industry
Hitler studied American public relations on how to "sell" to the people. This administration has honed PR to the nth degree. The pig farm was bought right before the 2000 election, the perception of Bush as a "home grown cowboy (when we know he's afraid of horses), using a "down home house" as a backdrop instead of his real sprawling ranch, selling the people the IRAQ war. Everything has been consumerized to feed to the unwitting public. I bet they spend millions or even billions on public relations. After all, Poppy hired a PR firm to sell his war with Iraq. For the people of the US, this modus operandi is very dangerous, very dangerous.

24. We started the war in Iraq because of London and Madrid
is that how it goes? Jolly good shit, this pre-emptive stuff, give me another toke.

Now we are entangled in a full-out civil war which nobody wants and 72% of our troops want out in a year (maybe they should see the advertisement too).

31. A Berlin tv ad, circa 1944 (if they had tv)
First, smoke pouring from a burning Reichstag.

Then voiceover: "You would never know it from the anti-German news reports, but our enemies in Russia are the same communists who burned the Reichstag."

(you can replace the term "Russia" with "France", "Warsaw", etc.)
(you can replace "communists" with "democrats", "Jews", etc.)

More propaganda.

43. Looking under streetlight'cause light is better?
That last line about (paraphrase) "in Iraq to get al-Qaeda" reminds me of the guy that searches for the item he dropped beneath the streetlight eventhough he dropped it further away. His response: "The light's better over here."

Going after al-Qaeda in Iraq is like going after swordfish in your bathtub because going out to the ocean is too much trouble.
