Bush Knocks over Lab Samples

Soo.... is it breaking news?? Probably not... but... Gerald Ford had to go through grief by the press for falling all of the time.

Good thing the anthax samples were not out today.

======

EDIT: Now THIS is funny!

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060221/ap_on_go_pr_wh/bush_7

"You're doing great work here," said Bush, who picked up a bottle of clear-colored ethanol and smelled it.

(((No idea at this point if he was sniffing alcohol before or after the spill.)))

Nobody in their right mind would sniff a container of unknown chemicals.

"Now Georgie in the lab there will be a vile of colored water. Pick it up and sniff at it just as if you knew what it is you are doing."

26. This is not really news
Seriously, it's easy to bump things in a typical lab with lots of bottles etc. placed about. One skill I picked up in grad school was to always keep my hands in my pockets when in someone else's lab to avoid knocking stuff around.

Sniffing a bottle of chemicals though, is foolish. You should wave the fumes towards your nose with your hands if you must smell it. Pure ethanol has a powerful stench too.

74. No, I use abs. and 95% EtOH in the lab. Stinky to me.
But I'm not a drinker, so maybe that's why. All those other solvents smell pretty nice, even the ones that rot your brain (mmmmmm...cyclohexane!). Gives a false sense of security if you don't watch it.

51. It sickens me to see that pic.....
I recognize that lab and those biomass samples on the table in front of the monkey. I worked at NREL actually from the time it was the Solar Energy Research Institute (SERI) until '96 when the first major round of budget cuts hit, thanks to the Contract ON America. I did all the analyses on those biomass samples to determine the effects of aging. In other words, how viable would the feedstock be if you harvested it once a year but needed to keep it laying around while the ethanol plant operated 365 days a year.

Now, I'm a high school science teacher....Turned out to be a fantastic move for me.

38. That's nothing compared to the farce
of the visit itself. You announce how we'll develop alternative energy, then cut 20 million from that lab and 32 are laid off.

Then when he's going there they restore 5 million to their budget, rehire the workers just in time. What must they think? He wants them for a photo op to show he was sincere in POTUS. But he the money for the renewable energy programs
is still short by 15 million.

Will they be cut again after he leaves?

Sniffing and spilling ethanol is stupid but it fits the stupid visit.

66. Lovely, Potemkin Laboratories!
"Two weeks ago, 32 workers, including eight researchers, were laid off at the Energy Department's National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden. The lab helps develop the very renewable energy technologies the president is promoting.

Then, over the weekend, just before Bush's planned visit to the lab on Tuesday, the government restored the jobs."

...and when the story gets out, it seems the layoffs were a "mix-up"! :sarcasm:
