US-backed mayor shot dead near Baghdad

(07:38) US forces in Iraq say the American-backed mayor of a Shiite suburb of Baghdad has been shot dead by US troops.

Mohannad Ghazi al Kaabi, the mayor of the politically sensitive district of Sadr City, is said to have been killed during an altercation with American forces.

The US Central Command said the incident was being investigated. It happened after a confrontation at the headquarters of the district advisory council, of which Mr Kaabi was chairman. (snip/...)
