NBC - Cheney likely to speak about shooting

Updated: 8:19 a.m. ET Feb. 15, 2006

Vice President Dick Cheney is expected to make his first public statement about the accidental shooting of a hunting partner, sources told NBC News on Wednesday.

Cheney will “certainly” speak to the issue, the sources said, but they also cautioned that “we're at Wednesday” and suggested that progress made by Harry Whittington, the 78-year-old lawyer shot by Cheney, will play a big role in how any public comment is handled.

The vice president, who had breakfast with President Bush and lawmakers Wednesday morning, has no public events scheduled until Friday, when he is to travel to Wyoming to speak to state lawmakers.

Journalists have been scrambling to piece together the full story behind the accident last Saturday at a Texas ranch. Meanwhile, Republican party pressure on Cheney to address the issue has been growing.

17. Yeah, what does that mean? We're at Wednesday?
"You media didn't get on the story right when it happened, so nanny, nanny, boo-boo, we don't have to talk to you!"

Or is the likelihood of Cheney commenting contingent on whether Whittington pulls through another day? After all, any public statements by Cheney could be detrimental to his defense of a manslaughter charge.

12. They will only do the right thing after public outrage or after
waiting to see if someone else will step up and clean up their mess. Pres, Jr. is very good at this; since he has had someone to mop up his messes his entire life.

19. This is the usual stonewall
approach--just hunker down and wait it out and it'll all blow over. Don't deign to explain.

If Darth makes a statement he'll be cold and perfunctory. He may not be able to hide his hostility, angry that his "privacy" has been invaded. He believes that he has done nothing wrong and that all the reaction to the incident is just persecution. This gives him the emotional framework to manage the stress with his natural aggression.

This is a man who answers to no one. Master of the Universe.

34. yep Scotty's the designated punching bag...
like the clown that pops back up every time it gets punched in the face.

I don't know if a cyborg like Scotty was programmed with human emotions, but if he has them, I would think he'd be pissed off being thrown to the wolves right now. I'm reminded of that old movie Stalag 17, where they throw the Nazi stooge out of the POW barracks and he gets blown away by his own people.

35. What privacy?
He is the fricking vice-president of the United States. He should have known that when he became VP he was no longer a private citizen. He put himself in the public eye and now he wants his privacy. He wants to "have his cake and eat it too".

39. that was the line
some RW mouthpiece tried to promote on Hardball last night--that this is a "private matter." Tweety let him repeat that a few times, then dismissed him.

This is the key to everything Cheney is about...ie. the agreed-upon rules do not apply to him, the public has no right to know about anything, he does not have to apologize or take responsibility. Everything that he does is Don't Ask, Don't Tell. Meanwhile the public shall have no rights of Privacy.

This is the arrogance of someone who believes he is The Annointed.

29. Replace the word "accidental" with "negligent"
I was a skeet shooter for several years. What he did violates every rule in gun safety. It's your job to make sure there isn't anyone in front of your gun when you pull the trigger. Your finger should never be on the trigger until you've sighted your target. Etc. Dickiebird did EVERYTHING wrong, and for an experienced hunter, that's just pure negligence.

Brit Hume: "Wouldn't you say that the quail hunting industry is a boon to our economy?"

Cheney: "Why yes. (penguin quack) I'm sure you can understand how anyone who'd stand in my line of fire would be ... well, pretty suspect. Terrorist, you might even say."

Brit Hume: "So, by shooting that man, you were actually defending us from both economic collapse and terrorist attack. You're God's gift to the United States, sir."

Cheney to break silence in Fox interview

By LYNN BREZOSKY

Vice President Dick Cheney walks on the third floor of the Senate side of Capitol Hill, Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2006. On Monday, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department issued a report that found the main factor contributing to Cheney's hunting accident was a "hunter's judgment factor." CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Vice President Dick Cheney planned to break his silence Wednesday in his first televised interview about the Texas hunting accident in which he shot a 78-year-old lawyer.

Cheney was to appear on Fox News Channel at 6 p.m. EST, the network and the White House announced. He hasn't spoken publicly about the accident Saturday that hospitalized Harry Whittington of Austin.
