Selective Service Notice Creates Rumors
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Filed at 3:59 p.m. ET

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A routine notice advertising the need for people to serve on the nation's draft boards has prompted a flurry of press reports suggesting the Pentagon may restart the military draft.

Officials denied any such thing is afoot.

``There are no secret discussions,'' said Pat Schuback, a spokesman for the Selective Service System, the government agency that would be in charge of conscription if the United States had it. ``We aren't doing any planning that we don't do on a routine basis.''

The United States hasn't had a draft since 1973, when it was abolished during the latter months of the Vietnam War. Registration was reinstated in 1980, in response to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, and the law still requires that males who are U.S. citizens or resident aliens register within 30 days of their 18th birthdays.

``It's a plan on paper,'' said Schuback. ``We're just an insurance policy. If we're needed, we're here; we're ready.''

15. Anything coming from the Bush Parallel Universe
is IMMEDIATELY suspect! You can't trust any of these bastards to do anything except to line their pockets and start bogus wars.

5. hmm, to NOT squelch this would seem like political suicide...
which leaves one wondering, just how desperate are they and how horrible is the future projection for the military efforts?

7. They are so desperate they are running Iraqis through training
Edited on Mon Nov-10-03 04:52 PM by underpants
So they can get some US soldiers out of there. Oh THAT landing at Dover will be televised.

But some fret that the Pentagon — growing desperate as the Turks, the Indians, the Pakistanis and other allies refuse to send reinforcements — has been turning out new Iraqi police officers and guards as swiftly and sloppily as Lucy and Ethel turned out chocolates on the assembly line.

The Washington Post reported that tens of thousands of Iraqis were being shoved into action "with little or no formal training in democratic standards and relevant job skills."

6. No deferments for college either!
I believe this is serious shit regardless of the official line from the government. I read the article at Salon and it mentions how the college deferments of the last draft (that is how chickenhawk cheney got one of his) will not apply to the next. That to me is very telling. :(

8. The real problem is the notice was NOT on the Selective
Service Web site but on a .MIL site....

That is what has people upset. When the Military is advertising for jobs for Draft Boards..........

9. nothing new here
despite the problems in iraq, there's still no reason to believe a draft is coming back anytime soon.

Don't you want the economy to recover? Bush is creating new jobs. Yea, that's it. It's part of his economic recovery plan.

13. They are lying sacks of liver shit. Earlier on another thread,
I mentioned that I had read that they haven't manned draft boards since 1967. I can't remember where or when, but there are some great researchers here, I hope someone can find out what the real is.

16. I think the last draft board was shut down in early 1973
Anyway, here's a Guardian article that seems to back me up:
