Feingold: President is breaking the law

In a prepared speech advanced to Raw Story, Senator Feingold sears President Bush over warrantless wiretaps.

Feingold's speech, in its entirety, follows:

#
Mr. President, last week the President of the United States gave his State of the Union address, where he spoke of America’s leadership in the world, and called on all of us to “lead this world toward freedom.” Again and again, he invoked the principle of freedom, and how it can transform nations, and empower people around the world.

But, almost in the same breath, the President openly acknowledged that he has ordered the government to spy on Americans, on American soil, without the warrants required by law.

The President issued a call to spread freedom throughout the world, and then he admitted that he has deprived Americans of one of their most basic freedoms under the Fourth Amendment -- to be free from unjustified government intrusion.

...

As the President said, we must always be clear in our principles. So let us be clear: We cherish the great and noble principle of freedom, we will fight to keep it, and we will hold this President – and anyone who violates those freedoms – accountable for their actions. In a nation built on freedom, the President is not a king, and no one is above the law.

I yield the floor.

3. I hope everyone appreciates Russ is gonna draw fire on this.
And that he has no fear of that.

I particularly hope those in a certain self-acclaimed leadership clique will have a chance to watch Russ stand in the flames of the hot breath of GOPzilla. And having seen that I hope they get an idea of why exposure to fire hardens steel.

Go Russ!

9. Well, the Gov of Iowa is gonna say he makes the DLC look weak
on defense.

But I am no longer worried about what members of the third party are saying. If they want to go their own way they should, and they should quit assuming that members of the Democratic party will just join them.

5. I have been listening to the NSA hearings..
the DEM's have been great. Feingold has had me laughing out loud. Schummer too (humour as dry as the perfect martini). I have particularly enjoyed Gonzo squirm. These are our real leaders. We will never be a party of crediable opposition UNTIL we speak up and speak the truth. I have a low DINO threshold.

10. Feinstein again urged the administration to end the domestic spying.
Democrats want the committee to subpoena internal administration documents
about the spying and objected to the decision of committee Chairman Sen. Arlen
Specter, R-Pa., to allow Gonzales to testify without having to swear to tell the truth.

"Once you do one thing, the temptation is great to do the other. We are either a
nation of laws or we're not," she said.

26. Well, Feingold was one of the ones pressing for a swearing in...
Edited on Wed Feb-08-06 02:18 PM by Mithras61
and IIRC, it was a straight party-line vote to not swear Gonzo in. I don't think Dems are giving anyone a pass on this (yet).

I'm hoping that this may be the issue that FINALLY brings these SOBs down. It looks to me like it's one that has BOTH sides pretty riled up (I actually read a 'pubbie blogging "How would I feel about this if it was a Democrat that was president and doing this, and it made me want to puke, so I KNOW it's WAY WRONG.").

Edited for speqeling :D

Mr. Feingold is also my senator. He gave a great speach. Do you think Senator Kohl will support him?

25. I have my doubts on Kohl
He voted against confirming Alito but also to end the filibuster. I've found it hard to depend on him when push comes to shove.

Welcome to DU! :toast:
