• Texas population, 2000 Census: 20,851,820
• Total congressional districts in Texas: 32
• Ideal population per district: 651,619
• Existing partisan breakdown: 17 Democrats, 15 Republicans. GOP wants redistricting to create a Republican majority in the delegation.
AUSTIN -- Despite staunch opposition from Democratic lawmakers, an East Texas senator today introduced a map of redrawn Texas congressional districts that he said accounts for the public's will and follows the law.
"The map complies with the Voting Rights Act, adheres to Supreme Court decisions, and I did that in association with you and with what I've heard from across the state," said Sen. Todd Staples, chairman of the Senate Republican Caucus, shortly after introducing the map the Senate Jurisprudence Committee.
Early analysis show the map could result in the election of as many as 22 Republicans and 10 Democrats, although Staples would not confirm that.
"The majority of voters here in the state of Texas support President George W. Bush in his politics. The majority of the congressional delegation does not," said Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst. "That's not fair."
