The Dutch cabinet has refused to give parliament clarity about a proposed mission involving the deployment of 1,400 troops in southern Afghanistan. The left-wing opposition and the conservative governing party VVD asked the cabinet whether it had actually taken a decision or if the mission was still only a plan.
Foreign Minister Ben Bot has told parliament that the cabinet will only decide after parliament has made up its mind. Usually, the cabinet takes a decision which it then presents to parliament.
The Netherlands is being pressured by NATO to participate in the mission in Afghanistan's province of Uruzgan. However, both the cabinet and parliament are divided on the issue because of the dangerous situation in the area.
